it looks nice. I've never really seen a shelf layout, but it looks good to me.

Today I test ran the layout and most specifically the helix. It ran great, I took my most troublesome engine, my 4-8-4 whose front truck always derails and it made it, back and forth! Great success. I had one trouble spot but I fixed it and now it works great. My Walthers heavyweights run perfectly through it all. But one of my BLI CZ cars keeps derailing, I think it's a coupler issue.

And now I added some dirt to them:

Magnus, where are pictures of your helix?  I heard it was nearing completion.

Here are the two first tiers which are almost done. Since these pictures I added protection against falling down. I will also ad more supports and then three more tiers to get down to staging:

Dunno why you needed the width part,. but they look good so far. Are you gonna "hide" them completey or try to work the of ramps into the scenery?

By dirt, are you using a texture, or actual dirt? And what was the immedite subsurface that looks like my last attempt at chocolate pudding?

As to setting: Sounds like you've got it worked out. Kinda follows my approach, which is that at the core, a rock with green stuff on it is a rock with green stuff on it. East Coast, West coast, or no coast.

I-m not sure I understand your first sentence about width? The ramps will be hidden with tunnels so the plan is to not have any direct view in to the helix.

Anyways, the dirt is zip dirt texture, that is plaster mixed with dry powder paints. It's covering a layer  of cement mixed with vermiculite that I've painted brown. That is the pudding.
