I was wondering if it is nessacary to lay a layer of foam for your benchwork or can you just glue the roadbed to the wood top?
I used the WS 4'' risers on my layout. They're somewhat expensive, however my layout is small and has a few bridges. If you want flat terrain, at least use 1" risers.
My roadbed is glued to 1/2" plywood. It is 'cookie cutter' on 'L' Girder benchwork. All track is elevated at least 3" off of the 'L" Girders so scenery can drop below the track level.

I've done it both ways. The advantage to foam is that you can carve rivers and ditches or other lower than the track scenery items into it.
