Layout Pics
Posted by Bob grech on Wednesday, January 9, 2008 8:23 PM

A boxcar is parked along a siding.

I weathered the boxcar using a mixture of A&I stain over Dullcoat. The rust and lime deposits were done using pastel chaulks:

A hopper car is loaded with coal.

The coal conveyor was scratched built from a project article which was featured in MR back in the 1980's!

A pickup truck makes its way across town:

Have Fun.... Bob.

Yes. You have good eyes. That's the only diesel in my roster. I use it mostly to run trains during open house visits.

Here a closeup shot of the engine:

Have Fun.... Bob.

Hey Bob, how did you weather that engine?  It looks great.  I tried my first chalk weathering attempt today with.... less than stellar results, haha.  I scraped off powder with my hobby knife, and it worked good for making rust-colored truck springs, but when I tried covering an old covered hopper, it wasn't so good because the powder wasn't fine enough; it collected as really tiny beads, sort of.  Should I have pulverized it first?  Also, I was using a really stiff brush, because thats what the Sierra Scale Models directions suggest on their site (i was using regular pastel chalks).  I was looking back today afterwards at pictures of...  i forget who it was showing their method with powder, but they were using a makeup brush, kind of like the one old barbers used to lather on shaving cream.  Is that the way to go?
