Gallows turntable
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, January 22, 2004 7:29 PM
I'm looking for plans or pictures for the superstructure of a gallows turntable. I'm using the Atlas turntable and want to make it look like one of the old gallows type. I'm also looking the size of timbers used in the frame construction.

Glen,
Just did a search at the Index of Magazines at this site, using the search term "gallows", with the results shown below. If you need to, you should be able to get copies of these articles either from Customer Service at this site and/or from the NMRA's Kalbach Memorial Library. You may want to disguise the Atlas table as the bottom of the pit. Not everyone will notice that the pit moves with the table. Hope this helps.

Thanks I'll check them out. I'm using the turntable on top of the layout, not sunken so I wanted to build a super-structure like Malcom Furlow did on his San Juan Central so it doesn't look so flat.

Actally I did a quick search on the net and found someone's construction pictures of an On3 gallows table. The page states that they used 1/4" basswood for the table construction so that would equal to 1/8" in HO. The rest of the pictures will let you extrapolate the building dimensions. The page address is: http://www.on30man.100megs11.com/G1/turntable.htm
Hope this helps anyone out there like it did me

We have plans for a couple of small gallows turntables on our N layout. Originally we were planning on using the Atlas one as a base, but the motor is very noisy, and the mechanism is very slow. We'll go with scratch-building using CDs (from the stack of coasters AOL keeps sending us [:p] )for the base. A stack of the AOL coasters will make a nice temporary form to make the pit wall nice and round.

Check Model RR Craftsman - search for the issue that says "Rugged Father-Son Pike". (It also has plans for Rotary Snow Plow). They put a gallows on an Atlan TT.

Check MR's Narrow Gage Project layout from a few years ago. (San Juan Central I think). They did exactlyi what you are trying - gallows TT on an Atlas unit.

Also, use your immagination and put scale lumber directly on the TT. Use Al' A's dimensions form Mainline Modeler. Also, re-check "gallows" for MR. I know one was shown, and is not listed in the search list. Good Luck, and Have fun.

MORE INFO:
Al Armitage had article and plans in MAINLINE MODELER, Jan. 2002, Pg. 58
