I started the benchwork for my new layout. I began work last Wednesday evening on the new construction. Much of the wood used in this layout came from the one I just took apart a month ago.
This will be an around the walls layout with an island in the middle. It will have a duck under or a lift out section to access the interior. In any case it is much more accessable than the first layout. Most of the sections around the walls will be 24". One section will be 30". The island will be 24" and the run-around end will be 27" radius so the table will be approximately 60".
Here are some pictures.
I plan on getting more done this week and next weekend. Hopefully I can get all the benchwork complete so I can start the trackwork.

I really like how you've incorporated the background frame into the benchwork. Dang, I wish I would have thought of that since I'm going to be screwing up masonite over my completed layout (assuming it ever gets done ).
I had to take a day of leave Tuesday to get my A/C fixed so I took advantage of the time and worked on the benchwork and the room.
Traindaddy I'm modeling in HO.
Here are a few more pics
Rcklein, I have one track light to install. The back of the room is dim I hope to lighten it up with the track lighting.
Preceng, I'm no different than you or anyone else during construction. I just hid it well in the first photos. Here you can see I've taken what was hidden and moved it under the benchwork. I'll still have to move it again when I start laying sub-roadbed and track.
A little better shot of my mess.
I set the level on each piece of benchwork as I attach it to the other. I still need to brace the legs on these sections.
This is where I stopped last evening. I bought more lumber from HD which now resides on the benchwork. While I was at it I picked up what was on the floor and put it on the benchwork as well. I was also able to get the 10' section up and leveled. I still have the middle island and the 16' side to go. So far I've been working on the benchwork for a week.
Hey Bill
looks awsome nice work really nice work. I 'd be very proud of that. would love to see your track plan.
thanks

Hi Bill, nice looking bench work! Quick question, the first few pics that you posted, how did you join the bench work in the corner? Im about to start with a L shape layout in the garage but not sure how to join the 2 legs of the L.
cheers
Fanie
fanie,
I screwed the end 1x4 to the two 1x4s on the adjacent table. I used two short pieces of 2x4's screwed to the adjoining 1X4 pieces so the screws had some "meat" to sink into and hold firmly.
Basically This picture isn't a real good shot but it's all I have right now to show you. I built the tables then butted them against the other and screwed them together VIA the end joist.
One thing I did prior final assembly of the legs was to temporarily mount the legs with clamps. I adjusted the height until they were level. I marked them and trimmed the excess, then screwed them onto the table making sure they were square.
Looks like you are making quick work of that benchwork project. Around the walls seems to be popular these days.
Keep up the great work!
