Layout Electrical Advice
Posted by weinschenksk on Sunday, August 5, 2007 4:18 PM

Thanks for the replies to help me get my layout on the board.......let's see if this works....

This was a layout that I was given.......it was not in great shape so I took it apart and did some reworking.......I've now installed the layout with Kato Unitrack......and there seem to be some electrical problems....

Looking for advice....what's wrong here?

I traced it out and I think there are some reversing loops here that need to be dealt with.

Any adivce will be welcome and appreciated.

Thanks

Sam

Yes, there's a reverse loop there.  If you take a look at the track loop in the lower right corner, it's possible to come back to the same point going in the opposite direction.  That's a reverse loop, and if not wired correctly, it's a dead short.

Since you've got a good long loop there, you might as well take advantage of it.  Go to the lower right, and trace the loop all the way to the first turnouts, both of which are at the top of the diagram.  Put insulated rail joiners where the loop track joins the turnouts, on the loop track side.  Insulate both rails on both turnouts.  Then, disconnect all the feeders to that part of the track.

If you're running DC, these need to be wired to a double-pole, double throw (DPDT) "reversing" toggle switch.  If you're running DCC, I'd strongly advise getting a reverser unit, wiring it up per the directions, and never worrying about it again.  Yeah, DCC can do that for you, automatically.

As noted in the previous reply you do have a reversing loop. Another problem with this is once you go around the loop I don't see anyway of getting back to the loop. You will need to have another loop to get back to that track.

So I'm told that the only stupid question is the one not asked!!!!....

Mister Beasley and Craig.......thanks for your advice......so check me out again.....I have added numbers to the turnouts on the layout for better clarity (at least for me)....am I correct in saying that #1 and #2 need to be isolated as a reversing section?

And I've added, another line (in red that I think will any Criag's concern about getting back to the reversing loop......it was part of the original plan and I dropped it but it looks like I need it....so here's the updated layout....

Again, I appreciate your advice and assistance.

Sorry, Sam, I don't see the numbers.  Did you post the right updated diagram?

Sam,

I think you put the wrong drawing in your message. It looks like the first one and there is no red on this drawing.
