How Ian Lampkin build sections?
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 1, 2007 7:13 PM

In the Sept MR, Ian Lampkin says that he 'built the layout sections so they can be bolted together in pairs to form boxes for traveling.' Any idea how they bolt together?

He also says that he can fit the entire 22' layout into a car. I am intrigued. Any place where we can get more info? Illustrations? This might make a nice online extra at modelrailroader.com

He may have done what many modular railroaders do, use plywood end pieces to join two modules to each other. This forms a box (sort of) with the scenery portion on the inside so it doesn't get damaged in travel.

If everybody is thinking alike, then nobody is really thinking.

One way of doing it would be to build in sections. The sections would need to be small enough to fit into whatever you planned on packaging them in or how you were going to transport them.

I built one many years ago. It was a 2x6 foot layout. I was able to put it in a box to transport it. It worked very well. Just make sure scenery is glued down or that it can be taken off. I built my sections, bolted them together then began laying track, etc. I made sure all track joints were at the split between sections. I just used quarter inch bolts to bolt it together. I also had wire plug in connections for all my electrical.
