Maybe I am dreaming, but I thought I read in a recent (last 5 years) issue of Garden Railways about how to convert a 45-tonner by Bachmann (large scale) to standard gauge by widening the wheels and such. I thought the article was by Barry Bogs. However, I have used the online search function, google, and skimmed through the table of contents of all of my back issues and cannot find the article. Is this a twilight zone moment?

I am not even intending to do it. I just wanted to read the article again. I know I read it somewhere, and Barry thought it might have been in a past issue of GR. So far, I have not found the back issue.
What the article dealt with was the conversion. The reason behind it was that Barry had an existing layout featuring D&RGW equipment... which is modeled in narrow guage (1:20? It doesn't really matter for this post) and he wanted to take an engine that was scaled already for that and run it on some dual guage track he laid. That way, the proportions would be correct.
Let me repeat. I don't plan to do it. I just thought it was interesting and wish I could find the article again.
Yes it exists, the reason why it wasn't found was besouse you were serching the wrong magizene you want Model Railroader and it was to convert a 1/20.3 bach 45 to 4'81/2''.
So, do you know what issue of Model Railroader it was?
I couldn't take it anymore. People remembered seeing it, but did not know where. Even Barry remembered that it had been printed, but he wasn't sure when. So I read every back issue I had and I found it! It was a LETTER to the editor, NOT an article, which is why it did not show up on any index. It was in the December 2005 magazine.
All this work, and I did not even plan on doing the conversion. I just wanted to read the article again. Oh well.

I do not believe it was an "article" that Barry wrote, but was a "letter to the editor" column with photos, showing his conversion of a 45-ton from NG to SG.
And to clarify, Barry is not doing 20.x but been modeling in 22.5 scale for years (just the track gauge is off, for those that measure it). And his conversion was to take the 20.3 diesel, that is rather large and robust looking, that runs on "Gauge 1" or "Gn3" as we call it, and converted it to a loose 22.5 standard gauge 45-ton diesel, for his dual gauge trackage, to run on "Gauge 3", or "standard gauge" was we model. Which SG in 22.5 is almost correct for gauge 3.
That loco no longer exists by the way. Though about to be recreated on my Gn3 layout.
