Single blade switch

I found this while looking for something totally unrelated....thought it was really interesting

The switch is located in Snaefell on the Isle of Man. It would be cool to model this.

That's pretty cool; I've seen one-rail moveable frogs but never a one point/closure rail. Definitely an economical way to go and a conversation piece as well!

These are very common on mining and field RRs. Its very easy to build in the field and if your dealing with very slow speeds common on field RRS you can have sharp divergent "turns" like this without derailing (most of the time). This would be very easy to model. I've seen trolley turnouts that are similar, but look like a traditional turnout but with the blade only on the outside rail, the inside wheel would simply roll over the frog allowing the outside wheel to take the turnout. Very common on in-street trolley lines.

   Have fun with your trains

It does look interesting, however as far as modeling it is concerned its not for me!

I think I'll do one for a mining section.

Underworld,

I posted your photo on my 7/8 forum and got some responses back.

Here's the forum site direct: http://www.7-8ths.info/78yackety/index.php?topic=180.0

And here's a must-see mining layout:

First, the switch: http://members.shaw.ca/emm48/kick%20switch%20Main.htm

Now, the mine: http://members.shaw.ca/emm48/Chalk%20mine%20Main.htm

I'm going to be building some mine critters and tipples, so I can understand your fascination with this. You might even consider coming over to the dark side (7/8); if you enjoy building stuff; we have a range of expertise from expert to novice, the latter of which category I'm in.

Someone on the Gn15 Gnatterbox actually built one of these switches; it's referred to as a 'kick switch' there. Link: http://forum.gn15.info/viewtopic.php?t=1010&highlight=kick+switch

FJ and G and SandyJ Look like the kick switch you posted works out the best when built as a "Y".....seems to have better geometry. The YouTube video is Nuts!!!!! Quite a step beyond the old animated hand car.
