Whadahellizit #2, building log

Hi all, over at MLS I've started a buidling log for another Whadahellizit and I thought I'd share it over here. I'm adding another loco, Pedro, to keep the first one, Napoleon, company. Afterall where would Napoleon be without Pedro.

 

This one is using the left over cab from an LGB Atlas I used for the Po'mans Forney...

Heres the basic pieces, the Mack chassis, LGB cab and a sprinkler pipe boiler.

 

PS Heres the first Whadahellizit, Napoleon, an HLW Mack modified into a steam tram.

 

 

Basic boiler complete and ready to begin detailing.

This version will have a saddletank, The base of which is complete also ready for detailing.

Cab is from an LGB Toytrain "Atlas" engine and will be essentially unchanged.

Began base for tender bunker, it will be bigger and modeled as steel unlike the wood bunker on Napoleon.

Smokestack is a styrene tube with a wood strip inside for stiffness, the cap of the stack is two toy train wheels glued together. Sand dome is from a cheepee toy train from Big Lots!

 

Forgot to mention, thats a 2" dia sprinkler pipe used for the boiler. It fits with a little cab trimming nicely into the Atlas cab. The tank is about 3/8" wider on each side and is about 1 1/4" taller than the boiler, I used a soldiering wire spool as the circle templete for the tank (it was handy) and is about 7/8" diameter, this gives a nices flat spot on top for the sand dome.

Sorry if theres no real dimensions provided, thats not the way I work. Its very much a "fly by eye" approach but thats what I like, a sense of adventure. I still dont know how I'm going to screw down the back half of the cab yet...

Real dimensions -  never use em - just check its square and doesnt fall thro the hole.............................

Styrene bunker in place, it was suppose to be steel, but I screwed it up so out came the scribed sheathing , covers a world of faults

Bunker and rear of cab each screwed down w/ 2 brass screws each.

Backhead detail added, its a thin sheet of styrene embossed w/ rivets and detail added on top

Boiler in place

Making rivet strips, a blunt nail in a pinvise, thin styrene and then cut into strips

What do you do with all these little engines you produce. You seem to be constantly building a new and more marvelous piece each time.  Just out of curiosity what is the ratio between the number of engines and cars that you have.  It would seem to me that your engines out number the cars.

Update: I'm done with adding details, I added a bit more than I thought and like the results enough that I think I'll add additional detail to the first Whadahellizit as well. I added sandpipes, grab bars, smokebox dogs, and I have crew figures that look nice and will permanently fix them in place after finish I painting it.

I'm planning to match the paint scheme more along the lines of my 3 LGB Porters. Silver smokebox, black boiler, black cab w/ green panels, zinc-oxide green interior, black bunker, red tank.

Should look nice when finished. Will add pics when I can

 

...and Yes, I do actually have more locomotives than rolling stock, what can I say, I like building engines alot more than frieght cars

OK basic paint is on!

All thats left to do is add couplers and do the weathering!
