Coupler Alignment
Posted by Smoke Stack Lightnin' on Tuesday, August 8, 2006 9:08 PM

The link and pin couplers on a Mimi align perfectly with my AMS cars.  I can't run AMS with Bachmann, Aristo, or LGB.  To run these brands with the Mimi, I've had to modify the coupler heigth.  I was thinking of changing everything over to Kadee, as they make several variations.  Is the heigth variance due to scale?

Thanks,

Rich F.

I put Kadee couplers on my Mimi by filing the shank thin enough to fit into the link and pin receptacle and fastening it with a 2/56 machine screw and nut.  It doesn't swivel sideways, but that has not proven to be a problem.

I don't know if the coupler height difference is due to scale as much as it is the difference in manufacturers.  Nearly all of my rolling stock is 1:20 Bachmann, AMS, or scratch built.

I changed the couplers on all of my AMS stock cars to Kadee because the AMS couplers didn't match up well with the Kadee couplers on my otehr engines and rolling stock.  By changing everything to body-mounted Kadee couplers I no longer have coupler height mismatches like I did with Bachmann, Aristo, et.al., but I've had to perform a lot o shimming and/or cutting away to get the car bodies at the correct height for the coupler pocket.
