Bachmann Porter Bash

Well All,

As if I don't have enough projects in the works.

Stuffed back in a dark corner of the hobby closet was a Bachmann Porter bash I started a few years ago.

Utilizing the updated Porter (new drive unit, metal rods, etc.) and some Lionel 0-6-0 leftovers, a USA archbar truck, 3/4 inch diameter wheels and some styrene, a Forney was in the making. The smoke stack is a combo of the Lionel fluted stack and brass tubing.

I plan on changing out the headlamp, however, haven't decided which way to go. I may use a barrel style Ozark lamp or oil burner. Haven't placed either one on the loco, Sooooooo.

The tender will be extended and also an air tank added behind the tender box (similar to the bogies and other Colorado Narrow Gauge engines). The cab is reminisant of the Bogie, so, I guess its going into the GG&BP RR motive pool although a very diminuative 1:20.3 model. I do remember seeing a very small Forney at the Forney Transportaion Museum in Denver a few years ago, however, this one is a "SLIGHT" deparature from that engine. Maybe not any prototype Forneys similar to this bash, but, HEY,
ITS MY BASH AND I'LL BASH IF I WANT TO!!!!! YOU WOULD BA***O IF IT HAPPENED TO YOU! LOL





You guys are encouragable. Wait 'till you see photos of Sunday's chopping and cutting.

The motor is vertical, moved the cylinder chest back 3/8 of an inch, modified the cylinder covers, cut off the boiler (superstucture)to add a larger diameter, heightened the cab, enlarged the cab door and so on.





Latest update on the Porter build.

I have the new boiler cut (2 inch OD PVC) and reversed the smoke box.
By reversing the smokebox, the stack is moved foreward and can add a larger headlamp and bracket the overhangs the front of the smokebox (Mason Bogie style). My camera is being repaired, so no photos at this time.

Hopefully, by the time the camera comes home, I'll have additional construction stages completed.

These little porters are alot of fun to work with; nice design. With the metal drive rods and rugged motor mount, lots of options.

I'm contemplating buying another 2 down the road, shortening the distance between the drivers and bashing a small 2-4-4-2.

Given the cab shape go with the big old fashioned oil lamp,
that IMHO will keep the believability factor high

I have several of the Hartland (old Delton) lamps. I haven't placed it on the engine for comparision.

It might be a little too large. Who knows.

I'll post a photo of it and let me know what you think.

Thanks for the view of the project - it looks fine.

I also have a rather battered Bachmann 0-4-0 Porter locomotive from a start set, just collecting dust on a shelf - and feel tempted to do some kitbashing to it - however the underframe seems to be well worn, making it a terrible runner. Does anyone know if it is possible to obtain a metal underframe from anywhere.

I am just getting started both in the rhelm of bashing, and on deciding what to do with the three Bachman Portors I've gathered.
I appreciate your ideas, and look forward to pictures and comments from those of you whom have bashed this wonderful little loco locomotive!
