Do you have the speaker inside a baffle? I try to always enclose the back of the speaker, especially if it's going into a large area. Leaving the back open cancels out the lower frequencies and reduces the volume of a speaker.

Hi Ray,
An enclosure is vital to good sound quality. I make mine from hardwood and glue it all together. I find that hardwood will give a much better resonance especially for diesel sounds. When I first installed sound in my FA1 I found it rather lousy. The enclosure made all the difference. Hope this helps. Later eh...Brian.

If you can pack in a little fiberglas behind the cone (making sure it doesn't touch) it will further improve the quality by reducing internal reflections.

Is this to do with a sound system in a locomotive?

Hi Ray,

Secret tip from up the valley: some people use small glass jars (baby food etc.) for very good results. [;)][;)]

If you have the room, WallyMart has a 3.5" 4 ohm speaker in automotive section that sounds really good. reasonably priced.

Is it REAL? or Just 1:29 scale?
