New LGB Amtrak equipment
Posted by Amtrk14 on Sunday, November 27, 2005 4:42 PM
Hello all,

Was just wondering if any of you were planning on getting the new LGB Amtrak AMD-103's and Amfleet Cars when they come out. They look really nice!

I plan on getting a lot of things I can't afford[(-D] They are very nice cars, well crafted I'm sure, but not really in keeping with my railroad's theme. I may get one just for keepsake, but that depends on the real price on the box when it hits the market.

Hi Jack,

Photos of the first Genesis and Amtrak cars that come off the assembly line.

CAD renderings are like artist's impressions - OK they are dimensionally closer, but still not as good as pictures of the production model.

BTW those people chomping at the bit for these items are perhaps interested to hear what the official scale is for the Genesis and the Amtrak cars. [:)][:)]

PS No, I don't need any, I stick to my RhB 1969-75 theme. Which reminds me what is the delivery date for the 20271 RhB G 3/4 Mogul in NA??

Photos of the cars are in the 2006 catalog . I have them but I can't release them.
as far as Genesis is concerned:
http://1stclass.mylargescale.com/Bucksco/figures/Genesis%202005.jpg

The Amfleet cars are screen shots from the 3D software that created the part files. They are virtual models- in other words they are what you get. If you take the rendering apart piece by piece you can measure and examine every part and download the part file into an SLA machine and "build" the part on a rapid prototyping machine. The tooling for the production piece is cut from the files that created the Amfleet car you are viewing.

As far as scale is concerned -they are "G" scale (45mm).

Heidi will be here with the Genesis in December.

Hmmmmmmmmm

OK, so you don't have any pictures, yet, of what comes off the production line! The link you listed clearly shows "Handmuster" (Pre-production)

Nice to hear that Heidi will be out in December, if the scale is 1:22.5 instead of "G = 45mm gauge" I may buy one.
Wouldn't want it to clash with my BRAWA G 4/5 which is exact 1:22.5 scale.

The "Handmuster" was built using parts that were milled on a CNC machine using the 3D files that were then used to cut the tools. You can't get much closer to the actual production model , but if you really want to see photos of the actual test shots:

http://1stclass.mylargescale.com/Bucksco/figures/Genesis%20sample2.JPG
http://1stclass.mylargescale.com/Bucksco/figures/Genesis%20sample7.JPG
http://1stclass.mylargescale.com/Bucksco/figures/Genesis%20sample8.JPG

These photos are undecorated test shots. No markings, lights or chrome parts.
The catalog shots are much prettier ;)
As far as Heidi is concerned - I guess you can't please all of the people all of the time!

Bucksco,

Will the Amfleet Cars be available in the Phase IVb scheme also? This is the newest Amtrak paint scheme.

Thanks,

Mr Lynch
Is LGB planning on bring the bulk head flat car out in any other roads? Kinda like they did with their grain cars.

Is it REAL? or Just 1:29 scale?

Long live Outdoor Model Railroading.

Sorry! I am confused,

I thought G Scale was 1:22.5 running on 45mm track [gauge 1] therefore LGB is considered to be narrow gauge equipment.
Or is the LGB USA stock actually to 1:29 or 1:32 scale?

LGB's Narrow guage equipment is usually 1:22.5.
The Genesis is designed to play nicely with all of the other North American Standard gauge products out there.

Hi Jack,
That sure is an impressive looking loco. Truth be told I'm still stuck in Transition Era outdoors as well as Narrow Gauge on my indoor line. Anyone with a long run will surely enjoy running a Genesis. It definately would look great going fast. Thanks for the photos. Later eh...Brian.

There are many people who are confused by that!

LGBs narrow gauge equipment runs the gamut from ca. 1:17 through ca. 1:24.
Within that range the equipment may try to represent anything between 2ft (600mm) gauge through European Meter gauge.

And sometimes - yes, it happens - the scales incorporated in LGB rolling stock may be close enough to represent proper scale for 1:22.5 Meter gauge. Or as in the case of the log-disconnects be close enough to 1:20.3 (the 45mm track then being a scale 3ft).

If in doubt - and if it matters - measure carefully, if it doesn't matter just admire the sturdiness and the gleaming paint finish. As I mentioned it could be 1:17 through 1:24 or in the case of NA and Euro Standard gauge anywhere from ca 1:26 through 1:34. It always depends what you measure and which item it belongs to.
One thing is for sure: LGB has a great variety of very different scales, some of them are so unusual that they have never shown up in any standards i.e. they are very unique!

PS Oooops, of course some people would just call it "G Scale"! [;)][}:)][:D][:D]

Rather impressive. Doesn't quite fit the era of the Asylum Valley, but I like it.

Bucksco,

Will the Amfleet Cars be capable of being coupled closely together, so it looks like to prototype?

Thanks,

Do you remember the location of the LGB/ASTER GG-1 video, the one where it shows negotiating a R1 curve?
