How do I hold up soil that makes my grade? NEED HELP

OK didnt know how to word the question but what should I do to hold up track that is on a grade. I am re-building my layout into a figure 8. Should I use wood, concrete, ballast? An ysuggestions would be helpful

You can use bricks or blocks.
You can use wood retaining walls.
Or, you can bix your rocks and ballast with Portland Cement, spread it and wet it and wait.
I use all three.
