Outdoor railroading is a lot of fun (except when it rains), especially when you get into the larger outdoor scales that you can ride on. There's nothing like swinging your leg over the tender of a live steam locomotive.

Easy Answer,
As a kid I got started in HO and loved it. Lots of running on a 4x8 table my dad made for me. One problem. My parents would'nt let me play with my trains outdoors. They explained that they were not made for that. Several years later I'm a dad now and passing on the hobby to my children. One fine day I was on ebay and clicked on a mis-located item and discovered LARGE SCALE. WOW I was hooked very quickly after. Real trees, real dirt, real rocks and the list goes on. Loved getting dirty as a kid, now I'm a big kid still getting dirty. Love my HO but this is awesome. Later eh...Brian.

Just messing with your mind Brian, I also have a small urban style layout in HO (7'x11')...I just couldn't give up small scale completely. I'm not such a bad guy once you get to know me.

You could'nt be all bad...you like trains. Just buggin' ya'. I still have all my HO but it is boxed up. The wife and I plan on moving the family to the country in about five years. We have our eyes on five acres in an area called Pine Ridge. The house and the shop will be set up for more trains. That will be most likely when I will also bring out the HO again. Not enough room here so Large Scale won out. I still pick up the odd HO item I like.

I started my first outdoor excursion 6 months ago. I have no web site yet, so I have no photos - even though we are now into cold autumn days here in England, time on the railway is too precious to waste, so the web site will have to wait!

Myy reasons for giving up a warm room and heading outside:

Because it keeps me fit - I have moved several tons of earth to get things started
Because it is a real engineering challenge - building the trackbed, bridges, working out gradients (and I have plenty of those!) and working with nature.
Because I have fallen in love with locos and rolling stock where I can see every detail
Because it is a lot closer to the real thing than my HO or N scale layouts ever were.
Because the sense of achievment watching a train blend into a natural environment gives an immense feeling of satisfaction.
Because I can run scale length trains if I wish.

Mostly it is because I can. Go for it!

Bears, Eagles, Condors, Tuna Fish, Garabaldies etc. Yup all have been seen on the Thunder Hills and Coastal RR. (mice, small birds, mosquito fisnh, Dwarf Platies, Red Tail Sharks, among the many) " Ya havta walk the tracks boy an get them varmets outta thar". Not to mention get up close and personal with a shovel when you need a siding. Swinging a hammer is necessary when building a structure and a 2" table saw does help. Need I go on? Try it you'll like it.

Well, I do it for the fun of it. I absolutely LOVE my trains, almost to the point of an unheathy obsession. I practically have train withdrawl symptoms if I don't do something with my trains every week. The fact that during my summer, i get up at 7:30 each morning instead of sleeping in to work on my layout, and wake up early before school and on the weekends just for my trains. The reason I do large scale trains outside is for the challenge, fun, enjoyment, and realism of it. The trains are so large, that they command a pressense that the smaller scale simply don't have. running them outside in the real world of plants, wind, noises, and everything else that goes on outside gives them a realism that you simply cannot find in the smaller scales. I'm not saying that the smaller scales are less realistic and not well done, on the contrary they are absolutely stunning, but puting your trains in a real world environment along with their size gives them a realism that cannot be achieved except with the real things. But why do I do it? In order to answer that, think to yourself something that you do all the time because you enjoy it and love it with a passion, if someone were to ask you why you do that, you can't really describe why. It's the same way for me. You can't adequately put it into words.
