End of season blues?
Posted by Rene Schweitzer on Friday, August 26, 2005 8:18 AM
For some of us, the later months in the year signal the end of operating season. For others in hotter climates, the fun finally begins. How much time do you spend in your railway this time of year?

Hi Rene

its backwords seasons here usually, been too hot here lately to do much, another scorcher today. Fall means cooler temps, even if it also means shorter days, but its FAR easier to do things when the temps are cooler, even cold (for LA). I just hope we dont have a repeat of last years winter deluge again. Shouldnt have to worry about that till November, till then its Heat Season, next month is the beginning of Fire Season. Then Rain, then Mudslide, then back into Heat.

   Have fun with your trains

I'd say more time actually working on things since summer tends to have me outside alot, Fall and winter start to be times to be indoors and give time to get back into the workshop and see what can be built.

This spring was very cold and wet here in mid-atlantic region, so not a lot got done. This summer was exceptionally hazy, hot, & humid; some days it was hard to breathe outside; so absolutely nothing got done. Lets hope for a few weeks of good working weather this fall!

In the UK we can run through Spring to Autumn, rain allowing. Even through the winter if we are keen enough. Winter gives one time to try building the projects we dream of during the running season.

In Florida I usually hibernate in the summer heat and do my outside work in the fall, winter and short spring.
Also not much fun trying to run the trains in the summer heat and much rain.

Fall Definately!!! It's the biggest time of year for my layout. I spend many hours in September and October getting it ready for Halloween and the "trick-or-treaters". (my layout is next to my front door)

Then, if the snow doesn't fly too hard, it's on to the Christmas display before finally wrapping it up for the winter.

This year! Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer!!!

End of season? You kidding me????????? That is the time I work on the RR. 75 during the day and in the 60's at night, no mosquitoes or baking hot sun and humidity. Besides, my fall runs from late September to early November. Then the temp drops to around 50. End of season...now really.................

Looking forward to fall so I can work all day without my brain being fried in the afternoon sun. Just a couple more months of summer to go!

LOVE the fall! My favorite season of the year--for model railroading and just about anything else. It also spurs the pre-holiday interest in train-related stuff.

It has been to hot this summer to do much, so actually in the fall is when Iget a lot of my work done. It hardly ever snows, and it rains occasionally, more in the winter though.

December is too cold here, and June is too hot in the afternoon -- but the rest of the year is good for outdoor activities.

For me the season ended on August 23, when I went back to college. However, my school is a stone's throw from CSX's River Line, so I will be railfanning more and updating my website again. And besides winter is for O-Guage hi-rail.

I did not vote in this poll, because, the dirt has not yet settled on my railroad. In the past 9 days, (2 weekends and the week between) I have spent about 45 hours working on the pond, the water fall, and mountain, and "realigning" my tracks. Actual train running time has been limited to about 2 and ½ hours. Living here in the North end of San Diego County, our prevailing weather is provided by the smog sent down to us from our friend "vsmith" and his neighbors. We will be enjoying our trains all year round.

Something I learned about myself many years ago in HO scale, was that the track layout that I had dreamed up and drawn out, was not very pleasing to me. Track "realignment" in HO necessitates a bunch of cutting and scraping, (I used a lot of glue on everything back then.) In this incarnation the garden rails are just laid on top of the clay, throw a little "ballast" down and drive the train. When I get the track plan to be in an acceptable format THEN and ONLY then will I dig in the roadbed.

It is not Autumn where i come from, it will be spring soon. Do you know that half the world is in the Southern hemisphere and the seasons are at different times.

Did you also know that a third of the world doesn't even have spring it only has two seasons wet and dry. So really from a geographical point of view we are only ralking about 35 % of the world is heading for Autumn.

Trust Ian to double shot his cannon and blow holes in any supposition! Does, however, make reading interesting and educational. Ian, you are currently in Rome, so do(think) as the Romans do --- meaning you are North of the Equator when in Normandy, so forget that your water swirls backwards when going down the drain( Or, when on the underside of the world does it swirl up the drain?)!

No end of blues, but, not DOWN... just tring to get more done in the same amount of time. When modeling in three different scales / sizes, you REALLY HAVE TO SCHEDULE almost everything. I have a little advantage... all three are indoor...

Not wanting to beat a subject[#ditto], but. sometimes there just isn't enough time, daylight, or energy. The upcoming time of year usually seems easier to find the needed time. Will have to wait and see, will advise.

End of season blues-- you betcha. Here on Vancouver Island, mid-July to mid-september is perfect weather, and I've got much done (i.e. start with a yard, finish with a railroad). But Vacation time is over and I head to work tomorrow. That means 7:00 a.m. off to work and home by 4:30, 5. Doesn't leave a lot of daylight. But Hopefully I'll still get a few outside things done.

The weather is great in the fall for work..until "the falling begins " , I usually have to rake about 300 bags of leaves-and of course lots of them find their way into the railroad

Get some land in South Texas! It is bascially cheap and baren, but perfect for trains. Plus the running season is longer.

Canadians and Winter Texans Welcome!!! Imagine, a spot of land for your RV and a section of track free from most hazzards of Northern Railroading! A winter and summer railroad!!!
