I need a man ....... (sigh)
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, April 7, 2005 6:50 PM
I had two lovely men in my life, - rough diamond types, cheerful, hardworking, - then when I sold my Echo loco a few months ago they decided to leave with the loco and take up with a new employer.
The trouble with having modelled in '0' gauge for ages is that my eye looks at 'G' scale models and gets itself confused over size and proportion. Now if I had a nice man to act as caretaker and cleaner while my locos are standing on the storage siding in my room it would only take a moment to get him to look over something I was building to make sure I wasn't making any errors.

Now before anybody goes rushing off to buy me chocolate and flowers it's a 'G' Scale man I'm looking for NOT a new boyfriend! Now can anybody recommend a maker of nice 1:20.3 scale railway type men who are well moulded and detailed. I would prefer to buy a nice new factory fresh man if possible even though I've done model wargaming for years (Ancients, yay Persians, yay Samatians) and I've made my own figures before today. Eventually I will make some individual character figures for my bu***ramway, but it would be good to have a look at an 'official' one so I can get an idea of size and proportion.

Thanks,

Annie :-)

Well Annie,

I think I may be able to help you just a bit in your search. Since you have done model wargaming, you could use Fine Folks since they come unpainted. http://www.mikesbackshop.com/[url]

There also is the people you know you need. [url]http://peopleyouneed.com/index.html
But they seem to be 1:22.5 with some ranging toward the 1:20.3 area.

Then there is Railroad Avenue they have painted ready to go men in 1:20.3 and you can find them at http://www.railroadavenue.com/[url]

And when you've decided the only way to get a man like you want is to sculpt him yourself, you may want to check out the articles section at mylargescale.com [url]http://www.mylargescale.com/articles/articles/

I'm sure there are probably some others also.

Best wishes in finding the man of your dreams [:D]

No Ian, just getting the hang of a new scale. Once I've made a model or two and have got over my beginner's nerves I will be fine.

And thankyou very much for those links Jack. I've had a look at them and they're going to be very useful.

Annie, take a look at the scale card as advertised in GR. I picked up a couple for my wife and I to carry, and a couple of folks in our club now carry them also! Well worth the bucks, even after translating into your currency.

Sounds like a personal problem, Annie. Having recently been de-wifed myself, I'm not sure I could offer much advice[alien]

I make my own people. When Chris Walas over at mylargescale.com started talking about making figures, I spent a couple bucks on a block of polymer clay and discovered that even an artistically challenged brat like me can make reasonable looking people. None of that searching for a figure that will suit the space, I make them how I want them!

Annie,
It's interesting that you mention looking for a "man." I've been doing research on figures companies and discovered there are 30 companies who make large-scale figures! Jack listed some good suggestions, but there's also many more. Preiser (Germany) makes nice figures, there's also Muella Models, Trackside Details, Fine Folk (Mike's Backshop), and many more.

For keeping the scale in mind:

in 1:20.3, 3 inches is just over 5ft.

To help my boys understand, for a long time I measured things in "Calebs." But he's just shot up several inches. Boys will be boys![^]

Preiser makes a lot of nice "people" I'm not sure if they make any in G though.

Thanks for the advice and information everyone :-)
I spent quite a while looking at the people modelling section over at www.mylargescale.com and I was able to print off their very useful scale people template sheet which has been sooooooo useful. The loco store siding in my room has Heritage No:8 at 1:20.3 scale sitting pilot to pilot with a New Bright 'Timberwolf and Redwood' loco at 1:32 scale. Those two locos are a constant reminder to me as to how confusing 'G' scale can be to a newcomer. Model making doesn't frighten me, I use to work in P4 and then finescale 'S' scale. I've built 'O' gauge locos totally from scratch too.
I guess the 'chequebook' (excuse British spelling) large scale modeller doesn't have to worry about things like this. He/she just heads off to the store and buys LGB or Bachman Spectrums, Accucraft or whatever, takes it out of the box and sets it down on the track. Now before a flame war gets ignited I want to say I'm not knocking that experience, AND I want to point out that I'm no 'rivetcounter' either (I collect and run British made tinplate '0' gauge trains for heaven's sake!), BUT I do like things to be basically in proportion and to look right. I guess I'm just pointing out as a newcomer where I'm coming from. I live with a fatiguing chronic illness which means that I can't always hold down a regular full time job and that is why I spend so much time exploring the cheaper options in 'G' scale like New Bright trains as a source of useful parts. That's why I ask questions about 'finding a nice man' and ways and means of determining that the part I'm making, - such as a loco cab for example, - is the right size for a 1:20.3 scale man to actually work for a living in.

Cheers,

Annie.

The scale thing is annoying. But if you really want to start a flame war, suggest standardizing on one scale[:-,]

Not Fair taking away the chance for a good natured comment like pick me[:D]
On a seriouse note keep an eye open in the local toy shop some of those figures could also be usefull in "G" scale.

I just read that Noch has plans to release G scale figures....this information from the Nuremburg Toy Fair. It did not say exactly what scale but I would guess 1:22.5.
