Flying dummy's
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, March 2, 2005 2:36 AM
Hi guys,
This is another of my personal views, as I see it.

You will have noticed that I spelt the word dummy in the title with an apostrophie 's' and not as 'dummies'. There is no insult here. I am refering to the little plastic and rubber thingy that babies love to suck and in the UK there is a saying when people fall out , 'Don't spit out your dummy'. It sometimes seems that a lot of dummy's are being spat out lately.

Can we please get back to what we had, a nice loose forum where people talked trains and if they wanted to chat about something else then they got on with it and nobody else really minded. I've just chatted with Walt on taxation, where's the harm? If it doesn't interest you then don't read it. There's lot's on here that I don't read and there's lots I look forward to - Marty's photos etc. I prefer to go into all the different topics because even though there might be general chat about whatever there will also be something about trains that I needed to know. After all, give and take, that is what its all about, isn't it?
Cheers,
Kim

In general in the U.S., they are called pacifiers but for some reason here in Michigan, people call 'em Binkies. I think it has something to do with it being the name of one of the manufacturers.
That wasn't your point?
Oh, sorry.

Whenever Ethan, my younger son would "Spit out his dummy," Caleb, my older son, would sing, "Bink Bomb!"

I could say that's why I went into trains instead of model airplanes. I didn't want to be a "Flying Dummy." [*^_^*]

Kim,

Dummy to you means the same as Binky means to me. Your point is well taken, we may take a slightly different path but we’re all trying to arrive at the same place. I agree that we seem to have become less tolerant of each other’s opinions when they don’t agree with ours. But let’s consider that this is an international forum and that there are very real cultural differences between us. I think what we’re experiencing are misunderstandings rather than outright disagreements.

I don’t know what’s suddenly causing this but I’m going to try to ignore it from now on. And if someone writes something that’s offensive to me, I’ll write them back and explain why this is so, I think in most cases they really didn’t mean to offend. And if I just can’t get beyond a real or imagined slight then I won’t read that thread any more and worst case, I won’t come to this forum any longer.

Well said Walt, let's get on with it all. I am very thick skinned and I have to admit that I couldn't care less whether anyone insults me or not, that's life. I like this forum, I like the regular people and visitors equally, irrespective of their contribution - as long as it's interesting and if it's not I won't read it. I will not stop coming to the forum, I will just ignore anybody I think is being an a**hole.

Kim

Well Kim I am one who has quietly spat the dummy and it is only becuase of the impending relationship with the German speaking forum that i have had anything to say at all.

I am really annoyed at this Erik person and the thinking behind his censorship. I am comparing those terrible words (to the rest of the English speaking world) that Americans use all the time. They had the hide to censor me regarding the use of the word *** which is quite tame compared to those words, that is used everyday in America (even though they don't know they are rude).

Well anyway Prince Charles yesterday called himself a Pommy *** on international TV and every one laughed about it including the wives of outr Prime Minister and Governor General; yet it was regarded as too rude to be allowed on this forum.

I really don't care what anyone else thinks about my reaction but that is how i feel.

Ian,
Luv ya man, bollocks(which I believe has no real meaning in the states) to them that don't see the funny side of life. We'll probably meet up when you get over here, get out of our trees and have a good swear and do it again after we wake up. Now you've got Charlie boy there you can keep him, we'll send the princess consort over to join him and hopefully you can find them a toilet cleaning job, nothing to strenuous for their first real job.
Cheers,
Kim

Or it will have a totally different meaning, like a waiter who prepares salads, or a docker who throws the heaving line, that sort of thing.

I'm not eating any salads in the US then.
Would the docker perhaps be called a 'heaver'
Good word (write that down)

hehe

Perhaps, before taking offence, one should first determine if the offender meant to offend, and even then, be slow to take offence.
