Greetings Folks,

The other day I was stopped by a train at a grade crossing near the intersection of King Street and 6th Street in Kingsville, Texas. As I watched the assortment of rusted graffiti covered railcars and observed the behavior of other, less “railfanish” drivers; I came to wonder... What is the longest train I can pull on the N&MRR (once it is completed of course)?

To help me answer this question I find that I must turn to you, my friends[:)], and see just how much a person can pull with what motive power and on what types of grade. If you do not have an answer, maybe now with the advent of spring in most of the world you might give it a try. If you can, please include anecdotes, type of locomotive used and length of train.

I look forward to your replies…

Oh yeah, pictures of the attempts would be great. [:D]

I run an RS3 and U25 B TOGETHER with about 20 cars and i also have another set of all HERSHEY 2 little critters back to back with 10 HERSHEY cars. right now i only have 170 ft. of track out side and want to add 30 more ft . ben[2c]

WOW!!! I counted 253 cars, pulled by 2 engines, with 2 helpers at the 72nd car. Impressive!!

Wow! My poor Ten-Wheelers would have a hard time with that! I hope that if my poor N&MRR ever has that much traffic that it will be up to the challenge.

I like the gradework and love the large open spaces that layout has. Who's layout is it? Yours?

Dave,

My grade won't be that great...mostly flat. The most I have pulled is four cars[:(], A Ten-Wheeler pulling a boxcar, a flat car, a coach and a caboose. [:)] ...but, I'm happy, I may never have a train with more than 10 cars, but I think that would be about right for my short line!

Hi captain Carrales
I set my train length based on what I had done indoors on the small scales.
so the figure I worked on was eight freight cars for the bogied stock
( just like the US type freight cars made by Bachmann ect )
My passanger trains are two or three old timers may be four when I can
find and afford an LGB D&RGW baggage car either std length or shorty train set sized one.
The trains are not large by any means but you do have 4x the visual
impact the small scales have.
Small line limitied traffic small trains
Large line heaps of traffic long trains
So I would think it comes down to how you view your empire that should be determining your train sizes.
The locomotive I have that is well and truly capable of heavy hauleadge would run out of track before had it Ioaded up so it has to work for a living
my line is as level as I can get it but stage two will have a 1 in 64 grade which sould not bother things too much

The title to that page says "600 feet of main line".
That's wrong.
There's over 2000 feet of mainline on Jens Bang's layout. And it is still growing.
We routinely pull 150+ car freights on that line.
In case you were wondering, all track powered with Bridgewerks power supplies.

I think if I ever have the need to pull more than ten cars, I may have to dieselize. I'm not sure how much line of track I will end up with, depends on what space opens up in the yard.

Joe can i iadvise you not to sit in your car watching trains; watching young girls yes trains I don't know.

Captain, in G gauge, I only have Engine, tender, box car, passenger car, and caboose. In HO gauge I have pulled 33 cars with a dash 8. There was about 6 inches of track left, couldn't fit any other cars on the layout.

As a Married (ironically, just a few letters away from "marred") American I have a strict look don't touch policy...or its that you "break it you buy it..." er..."No shoes, No Shirt, No Service!" I forget which tired chiche it is.

Believe me, watching trains in Kingsville, Texas is not voluntary. Most cities in South Texas that have railroads are poorly designed. A passing train blocks every road crossing in the town. They planned to build an overpass to get to the hospital, but the citizenry voted it down![:(]

When my town, Premont, had tracks there was a design of a more sinister nature. The West side was for the "Whites" and the East side was for the "Mexicans." Yes, the American segragation many of you European, English and Aussies have heard about.[:(]

Railroads, "thus the wrongside of the tracks," was once more than a metaphor. That has long since ended, but the legacy of that evil practice is evident in many of the small towns. In some, the roads don't even match up, so one can't drive directly from on part of town to the other.

Well, back to girls...

Do you find girls like to watch trains as much as men like to watch girls? ...AND THERE THE "SEXISM ENDS!"[:o)]

I like the smaller to medium trains myself, they remind me of the short trains that ran through Premont when I was a child.
