My garden railway on the CHEAP!!!!

My garden railroad has violated every known rule in G scale railroading.

Examples:

LGB track for main line and turnouts to spur lines. 

Spur lines are new brite PLASTIC track and switches.

Engines are 9vdc R/C TOY engines New Brite, Sciencetific etc.

Main line is 20vdc.

Engines have a reducer to 9vdc in each tender along with 2 or more 9 vdc Lithium batteries in parallel. 

Batteries automaticly recharge when on the main line.

As 9vdc engines go off the main line the 9vdc on board batteries take over'

Freight cars are light weight new bright. box, gondola, tank, flat cars and scratch built. Anything cheap!!!!

Two sciencetific engines pulling together can pull 24 new brite box cars with ease that is with the help of added weight in each engine. and frog snot.

Main line engine is a Brachmann 4-6-0 and it does quite well pulling 12+ cars.

I have an identical 4-6-0 battery R/C that runs with the 18vdc unit and they pull quite well together.  Whats nice is that the battery unit can unhook and retrieve cars from the plastic track.

With this system reverse loops are no problem just have a section that can go dead while the battery units are on it and reverse polarty and walla full steam ahead.

As a retired Firefighter and electrican this is more fun than bothersome. 

Besides as time goes by I can upgrade to the REAL stuff.

Oh yes my smoke units are E-cigarettes with an aquariumn air pump sandwitched into a small plastic pill bottle and boy do they smoke.

This whole setup produces a mainline railroad and a unconnected short line railroad.

I have dismantled all the engines, cleaned, lubed and trick them out

Plus repainted them to look not as TOY engines but more realistic.

Rest assured my fellow G scalier I will provide pictures of the tricking out of these inexpensive "TOY" trains. Right now I have a test circle track with straights and curves so I can evaluate the front truck performance. I will soon start on building a 0-6-0 switcher that will be a combination of a New Brite "Bump-in-go engine and a motor from a sciencetific engine.  The new Brite will be cut down and a cantilevered coal bin will be added. I have pictures of one I am using as a guide.

I might add that I found out that running the new rechargeable 9 VDC Lithium batteries will be a perfect match for my system.  I was lucky to purchase 4 new Brite G scale switches for the spur lines.

I have exhausted all my 25% coupons from Harbor Freight buying their 10 packets of their super glue gel.  Will now have to resort back to 20% coupons.

I don't know if I mentioned it earlier but the main line will be LGB brass track.  The single most expensive investment. I have adapted the new Brite plastic track to the LGB track at the turn outs with a new Brite rerailer for added assurance at preventing derailments.  There is one section of either straight or curved LGB track before the plastic frack. So far I have been lucky.  A little patience and work with my Dremel tool and the mating of the plastic track to the brass is quite straight forward.

The really big push will be this spring when the laying of track through out the back yard.

I picked up 6 sheets of 4X8X2 inch insulation at a Habitat restore for just a few bucks . That will be my foundation for my ballast.  Cut 5 inches wide and at a 45 degree angle two inches high. 

Will send pictures of my first engine modification as soon as I down load my camera.

John I too had problems figuring how to post pictures on the forum as you can't get them straight from your computer they have to come from an outside sorce, Check out Tom Triggs post afew months back when I was trying to post and people didn't like opening a URL to pinterest he explained alot, he uses some picture place to store his I just now use pinterest as it's free and pretty easy to use. I believe everyone who has a email account also has a pinterest account they just don't know about it. From your computer you copy from your file to pinterest copy the URL at pinterest and right down the side go to form and start a post selest picture icon and paste the url in proper place and there it is. excited to see you ecig smoker sounds like you are having a lot of fun and that is what is all about, me I like to make stuff out of nothing and kit bash and heavy weathering, have fun Bill

 I was able to post from my OneDrive Live.   You can create a link there, use the picture icon on this blog site, and then copy and paste the link into the appropriate bullet of that menu.  The good folks here helped me to op-test that method, and it works.

Google Drive may have a similar feature, but I am not sure.

You will probably need to subsrcive to some sort of web based drive service. I get mine through Microsoft, simply because I am used to their software.  Some have fees, some do not.  The ones without fees usually have some sort of restriction on their use.

Got the loco and the cars. Cool! The earlier post showed a "BUFF" tanking a drink from a KC-135.  Also cool, but not as train related!

Where do you find lithium batteries that are actually 9 volts? They come in 3.6 volt increments.
