Well I am sorry if you are upset at this, but tht is what is said int hat Kalmback magazine and I will find it later and quote from it verbatim and i have found what he has to say is very accurate and from experience in the field; not just a lot of blokes (guys) sitting around giving opinions.

I have two R3 electrically operated switches and I have a bit of trouble with them, not much. But the the R1, I have which is also electrially operated and it must be "driven", by that when you have a double axle bogey (truck I think) even when coming from the trailing end, the switch must be in the correct direction or else the the rolling stock will "split the switch" and this happens more often than it doesn't. This is not aimed at any manufacturer, it is just what i have found with my layout. It is not to do with curves either, as I have taken good advice and kept curves right away from my switches. I don't even understand the mechanicas of it; its just what happens and Jack Verducci said it would and I didn't read that part carefully enough or else I would never have put in an R1 switch at all.

This further enhances what i have been saying all along, less is better and just feel your way, until you are comfortable with how you are going and what you have seen with your own two eyes. As what works for one may not work for others.

Regards ian

Truly if i could do without them I would.
