Shay wheels
Posted by Rex in Pinetop on Friday, August 26, 2016 2:05 AM

My Shay sees a lot of track time because it's been very reliable for visitors of our front yard railroad.  My surprise came last week when I had multiple derails and discovered loose wheels on all three trucks.  It appears that the bushings/wheel plugs discintigrated and the main screws then held nothing.  I ordered the repair parts and was further surprised that there is a maximum order quantity of 10.   I only needed 6 but ordered 10 anyway - the price was only $0.55 each.  Has anyone else out there had loose wheel problems on the Bachmann Shay?

Washer kits. Showed up within the first 30 days of initial release of the Shay.

How old is your Shay?

Originally short screws, small wshers, only plastic washer between wheel and axle bearings.

I know who invented the washer kits...and they are steel washers with nylon spacers, long screws. ALL Shays since second run have them installed.

How big OD is the washer over the plastic bushing on the non-geared side?

If just the diameter of the axler, bad. If the diameter of the outside of the bushing, good.

Original screws 1/4" longh, new ones 1/2" long (or so).

I don't know how old my Shay is.  We bought it at the Seattle show 5 or more years ago.  It does have a full size washer covering the bushing on the non gear side.  It's running fine now.

Thanks for the info.
