Working coaling tower
Posted by CHRIS MOLNAR on Monday, March 30, 2015 7:31 PM

I would like to build a working coaling/ore tower for my railroad.Does anyone have any suggestions for the mechanism to load and stop loading scale coal. The basic structure I can build but any help with the working parts would be appreciated.

I am working on a coaling tower.  Useing a 1 by 1 by1 in channel with shafts at ends, a 1 inch machine servo timing belt turned inside out and a gear against a couple of rollers.   The gear is driven by a slow speed  18 volt motor to pull belt .  Have hoppers at top and bottom to feed black beads as coal into. Not real cheap system but it works.

Maybe it will give you a little  idea

Thanks for the info. I'm not sure if I want to automate the coaling tower or use manual operation.I'am really trying to load Hopper and Ore cars so I like your idea of using black beads as coal. I thought about aquarium charcoal but extra wieght might be a factor as my railroad is small with small rolling stock. Thanks agian.        Chris
