I have an old (23 years) LGB Mogul with sound, but the sound only works at slow speeds now. If I go too fast, it either shuts off completely or goes into a constant steam hissing sound. It will not chuff. Does anyone know how to fix this problem, or will I have to replace it?
I know from eBay postings I am not the only one having this problem.
When a steam locomotive is running too fast, the chuffs will turn into what we perceive to be a continuous hiss -- the problem is not with the model but that you're running it too fast.
As far as it shutting completely off, I don't know why it would do that. I have seen replacement sound systems crop up periodically on e-Bay, so you might search there for a replacement.
However, if other people have had similar experiences with the sound system, it is probably not something that a replacement would solve.
I have one of those engines, but do not use the LGB sound system -- I converted mine to battery power using the AirWire900 and Phoenix sound system.

I should not say I run it fast. I should say that I run it faster than really slow. I have two loops of track and put a slow freight on one and a faster passenger train on the other. With battery operations I can run the slow freight at what I think is about 10 MPH scale speed. I then run the passenger train about 15-20 MPH scale speed. It is certain not fast enough to make a single hissing noise. The cuff should be easily heard. If I use the Mogul for the freight train I am OK. It I use it for the passenger train it is likely to stop making any noise or just blow steam straight and not chuff.
Sounds like the board in the tender has seen better days.
Only thing to try is a fresh battery if you have not yet done this.
