I found a prototype to Model
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, October 7, 2004 9:50 AM
Hey Ya'll

Buy, am I exited. I like to model prototype railroads, but the area I wanted to model never had a railroad run through it. Or so I thought. Last October. When we were making our yearly trip to Pigeon Forge (Dollywood too) and Gatlinburg Tennessee, we stopped in Cades Cove just outside of Gatlinburg.

We rode along a road that circles the parkalong the edge of the mountains that looked suspicioulsly like the roadbed of a railroad in most places (some grades were to steep for any train exept for a rack railway though they were steep, they didn't go that high.

We stopped at every possible log house and I took pictures inside and out so I could scratchbuild them. When we stopped at a recreation of the Cades Cove villiage, I saw some extrodinary houses, cabins, eaterys, and a grist mill. I stopped in the gift shop and I found 3 books about a railroad Ihad never heard of. I read with exite ment. I can't remember where itall ran and the name, I plan to buy the books when we go back this October. What do ya'll think about that.

locomotive10, It's great to have a prototype to base your layout on. Mine's the Waynesburg & Washington RR in South Western P.A. it was only 28 miles long. Im my opinion perfect for a Garden RR. I not sure how true to your prototype your planning to be. I'm going for the loco and rolling stock being real close to the prototype, however modeling the stations is a little intimidating due to the fact they are brick structures and I'm a bit of a perfectionist.
What are your intentions or goals?

Hey Ya'll

carpentermatt, I intend to build the railroad from Cades Code station (Gatlinburg in all sence) to Pigeon Forge (Just 10 miles away) There are no pictures of the stations, So I'll personalive Piko stations and Durnago Water Towers, and build reresentaitions of the preserved buildings and cabins in Cades Code. The railroad was 10-20 miles away from the ET&WNC railroad at the closet point, so I intend to buy some Bachmann ET&WNC equipment and make a fake document stating that the ET&WNC has trackage rights over the CC&PFRR (I made up that name until I can find out the name of the prototype. I have a spacious backyard, but a limited budget, So It'll work out nicley. I pln to have a nice trestle and 4% grdaes like the prototype.

It was a flimsey railroad that had 3 engines at the least 10 at the most. Thats good too, It is a narrow gauge and I plan to buy the following.

1. Bachmann ET&WNC Mountaineer Set
2. LGB Undecorated Mogul (When I get my job back)
3. Hartland D&RGW 4-4-0 (On loan from D&RGW)

I'll add more later. I only need a few more caoches and a handful of freght cars. I plan to get in to live steam. Dye to the steep grades, I'll add radio control (I've herd that works)
I have been promised a Ruby#1 for a graduation present as this is my last year at middle school and I would like to convert it to a Forney using a FH&PB forney conversion fit, or I'l try my luck without it. I plan to paint the rolling stock in the railroads name, but leave the ET&WNC stuff alone. The Hatland 4-4-0 will stay like it is, but most likley it will be painted to.

The Towns were not that big, so I am in luck as alot of the Piko and Pola kits look like buildings I saw in the book. I'll get back to you with more.

Good luck with that big list! That's alot of work to do, Set small goals that eventually achieve the big goal so as not to get discouraged.

Hey Ya'll

I have some big goals but I keep most of them small. My biggest is to own a new Accucraft Live Steam 2-6-0. Maybe a C-16, but these are long term goals(we just learned about goals in health class this morning). I am going to buy the Bachmann
4-6-0 Because it's cheapest or maybe their industrial mogul. I have asked for the 4-4-0 for christmas and a few coaches, and the LGB mogul won't come until I have built the railroad and becan phase two, Laying thetrack to Cades Cove. The line will terminate in Pigeon Forge. I think instead of sepaerate cars, locomotives, and such, I'll buy a Bachmann Set. Then add a few cars. I would like to add LGB MTS Control later on.
