Momentary Switch Controls
Posted by repairman on Sunday, September 1, 2013 8:49 AM

Anyone have any thoughts on problems with LGB 51750 momentary switch control box that is only throwing the track switch EPL one way? The up side works, the down side does not. Have tested with a meter and there is power coming when you push towards the top but not the bottom. Switch was working.

Been there, Done that. Check the "power in" block in box #1. I was getting a loose intenal connection and breaks in power. Move your "power in wiring" from box #1 to box #2 and all should be well. This assumes you have a string of 51750's pinned together.

In my case the pressure of activating the momentary contact was just enough to disconnect the faulty connection in the "power in" connections. I was able to throw the points to the mainline but not to the sidings.

Did this 51750 ever work?

Input needs to be A/C and if either the input is missing half the waveform, or a part inside is bad for 1 side of the A/C, then a EPL drive will only work in one direction.

Solved the problem, these units require 18 volts of power. I used the LGB 51081 18V power pack and it works fine. Previously I had tried connecting to several transformers that I have with 12V, 16V and 22V with no luck. Amazing how exactly 18V works fine. Instruction manual does not state requires 18V.

My LGB machines have been working on DC for over 20 years. Momentary toggles (centre off), a full wave bridge from an old USA smoke board, connected across the AC output of the power pack in the shed.

No buying (or maintaining) EPL controls.
