OK, I guilty. This post has nothing to do with railroading, but I just have to share. Late last year I applied for a volunteer position at a dinosaur dig with University of Montana. In yesterdays mail was my acceptance letter. I’ll be spending the last couple of days in May and first two weeks in June helping to dig a T-Rex. I will be taking as many pix as I can to share later, however, there are restrictions on what pix I can post. The Univ restricts pix that can be used to locate the area by “poachers” until after the dig is complete. Since the dig is being filmed by History Channel, they have limits on the picture content until after they broadcast next fall. I’m thrilled to the max and just had to share this.

After the dig I will be hitting some of the narrow guage lines in the rockies. Will post those pix.

Colorado trains? man I wish I could do that one year, Silverton, Georgetown Loop, Colorado State Railroad Museum are all on my bucket list as well as the Cumbres & Toltec, which I highly recommend you do now, as it may or may not be around in the future (its fate is always seams hanging by a bureaucratic shoestring ) Also depending on which way you go, the Nevada Northern in Ely looks good, or the Grand Canyon RR but they dont have steam anymore.

My sore card refelcts Silverton - 3 times, Cumbres & Toltec - 5 times (2 times the 2 day round trip) Georgetown - 2, Colo RR museun -20+, Cripple Creek - 3. My favorite of all is the Cumbres & Toltec. When I was at Grand Canyon RR last year (round trip for 3 days in the canyon) they had an old steamer in the shops rebuilding the boiler, for use on their Christmas specials. Last year while at C&T I found that they had a new attraction. They have a 1950's deisel pulling 1930's-40's passenger cars (standard guage) delivering passengers to the Antonito station for the narrow guage trip. I think it came out of Walsenburg(?). Amtrak runs a special from Denver to link to the vintage deisel to Antonito.
Depending on how the dogs handle the trip I plan to spend at least 10 days riding the narrow guage rails.

Correction: The vintage diesel comes out of Farminton, not Walsenburg. Sorry about that.
Perhaps it's going to be like an undisclosed location at a dig near Santa Cruz, California.
