Whether metric or inches/feet, grades are measured as a percent of rise.
So, a 100 inch long track that rises 2 inches is 2 per cent.
1000 cm that rises 20 cm is 2 per cent.
SO . select the grade (2 per cent would be good, or if space permits even less) and then the clearance height (has to be top of rail to top of rail, and you will get the length needed for clearance.
SO if 1 per cent and 12 inches top of rail to top of rail, you get 1200 inches/100 feet!!
A long distance and this is why many go to 3 percent grades and use helper engines.
