LGB transformer
Posted by ezaircon4jc on Wednesday, December 12, 2012 8:04 PM
Question about my LGB 5003/110. When running at or close to full forward (#4) the internal breaker pops after about 30-45 minutes. I am running about 20' of Bachmann track inside. I am also using a couple of Bachmann "Big Hauler" transformers as "boosters". They don't seem to have enough power to move the engine at a pace best described as s--l--o--www (even though they are set at full power). The engine is an LGB 2119d Mogul.
Any ideas?
TIA

any of those transformers should run that on 20ft of track sounds like perhaps something binding in the train somewhere.are you running a long train or is it just the loco?

perhaps find a way ti run just the loco without it touching the track see if any of those units will run it buy it self

you have a problem somwhere just not sure where yet my first suggestion would be to clean and oil the loco with a plastic friendly oil go from there

The loco is pulling 4 Bachmann cars. Length of train doesn't seem to matter as I have removed cars. Everything runs well until that magic point when the LGB transformer shuts off. The Bachmann transformers don't seem to have the power to move the loco; with or without cars. I had the loco opened to do some minor maintenance and noticed some minor "corrosion" on the motor case.

yeah you may have found your problem if the motor has bushings and you can get a clear shot at them a drop of oil just on the ends where the bushings are may help but it sounds like you may need a new motor sooner or later if thats corroded i wold be checking axles and any turning drive train part

I guess I need more power. As long as I have all three transformers attached (and the LGB unit is less than full power)  the train runs fine. I purchased   this today. My plan is to upgrade the transformer later to a higher amp unit. http://www.ebay.com/itm/PIKO-TRANSFORMER-POWER-PACK-WITH-CONTROLLER-WIRE-G-Scale-HO-/290828647248?_trksid=p2047675.l2557&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&nma=true&si=ZLecp49ZlHCYmBnsE%2F%2FRKzQ9BDc%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

This unit is only 1 amp at 20 volts by the mfg spec.  Better than the LGB/Bachmann half amp units,

I would only use this at my test bench, you need more power for running an engine with smoke/lights plus lit passenger cars.
