New to G scale

hopefully you can give me a quick answer. I have a PRR passenger set by Bachmann my problem is some where I lost the piece that plugs into the wall and goes to the controller. Now not really worried about that as think I want to goto another transformer. I have an old Lionel 0100 for HO trains so its dc on track side ac on accessories side but doesn't seem to have enough power to run this set. I bought this set about 4 years ago and have had set it up a couple of times but as said lost the cord.

Now my main question what voltage does this train run on or better up to how many volts should I be looking for and not hurt this engine I know the 17 my transformer puts out must be low as it does run it but slow.

I'm not looking to make a big layout or outside layout at this time but I do have enough track to do about 5' x 8' oval.

For a 5' x 8' layout size you describe I would look for an LGB 50081 powerpack, its rated at 1 Amp output, the original Bachmann packs were only 1/2 Amp. That will allow you to power a decent small size layout. My old garage layout was 10' x 20' and that was powered by a single LGB pack no problem. Planning anything bigger than that long tern, look for a larger pack, 5 Amps or larger depending how big you want to go. An LGB 50081 should be between $10 and $20 on Evilbay

Your biggest problem is the current capacity of the old Lionel transformer.  If you measure the voltage on the track when you're running your loco I'll bet you read significantly less than 17 volts.  That old transformer just can't put out enough current to maintain that voltage level.

I was wondering that also. as the train really only goes a little better than a craw. Thanks for the input.
