*Copied from another thread because I was told I would have better luck here*
First off, hello. I am new to this forum, so please forgive me if this is posted in the wrong section.
I have a friend who gave me some old trains to sell (a Locomotive, a Coal car, and a Caboose).
I'm not sure where to look up information regarding these trains, or how much they are even worth. All I know is that they are in great shape. I will describe them below:
Locomotive: Black, with numbers "5102" on the side, and a logo on the front side saying "Lionel Large Scale".
Coal Car: Black, with "NEW YORK CENTRAL" on the side.
Caboose: Red, and with a black roof. On the side it says "PENNSYLVANIA" as well as "700", and in smaller letters/numbers "BI.T 1-87 LIONEL".
There is also a small conductor and coal shovel'er figure that came with them. I assume they stand on the train where there are little bits raised up.
Can anyone shed some light on these, and possibly give me an estimate on how much they are worth? I can take pictures if anyone needs them.
Hello,
Pictures would be a good idea. From your description, these were part of a Lionel large-scale starter set. Lionel dabbled in large scale for some years in the early to mid 1990s, so these aren't that old, or rare pieces.
Unlike O-gauge Lionel products, there is not a price guide or collectible market for the large-scale stuff. I checked the Greenberg pocket price guide, and the large scale products aren't included. The only option for pricing is searching completed auctions on eBay.

Sorry for the late reply, here are just some quick pictures I managed to take.
Bump
Lionel Atlantic... if in PERFECT shape, maybe worth $200, but most are broken in some way, stripped gears, broken valve train, etc.
Once modified they can run nicely, but have very poor power pickup, only pick up on the 2 drivers. To make a nice track powered loco, need to add metal wheels and pickup to tender.
I have a pretty extensive writeup on it on my site: http://www.elmassian.com/trains/motive-power-mods-aamp-tips/lionel-vignette/atlantic
You really need to run it to be sure it is working fine... but be careful, if the drivers are out of "sync", it will destroy the valve gear and siderods.
Look carefully before running.

Thank you for the info.
Anyone have any other information about the other parts?
The first picture is the tender for the locomotive, it goes with the locomotive, as part of it.
The last picture is a caboose, worth maybe $25 or less.
