Locked thread
Posted by grandpopswalt on Monday, December 5, 2011 5:24 PM

My "great American Layouts DVD" thread is now locked. How and why does that happen? There's a "Locked: Do not allow replies" box at the bottom of the "Post a message" page but I'm pretty sure I didn't click it because there were 8 replies before it got locked.

I've reviewed the forum rules page and can't find any rules there that were violated by my thread - any ideas?

I cannot even find the thread.

Last year there was a bunch of consternation at the unsolicited arrival of the DVD and the wording where it seemed to imply to some people that they were obligated to pay to return it if they did not want it.

This year, the wording was changed and made very clear that the recipient was under no obligation to return it.

Clearly the comments were heard, but maybe any new complaints touched a nerve.

This is the publisher's site, so they can do what they want.

I appreciate the DVD, but have not watched it yet.

Regards, Greg

Hi guys,

I was asked to lock the thread (which somehow got unlocked again) yesterday. This same discussion has been on other forums, and it's gone south quickly.

This DVD was sent by TN Marketing, the same folks who did the Dream Plan Build series. If you like it and want to subscribe to this series, send in payment. If you don't like or want it, throw the bill away. Give the DVD to a friend, use it as a coaster, whatever suits your fancy.

Throw any future "bills" away. You are not obligated to send any money since it was unsolicited.

...or just send it back. It comes with a postage paid envelope - just check the "do not send" box then leave it in your mailbox for the postman to pick up, you dont even have to go to the Post Office.

If you decide you dont want to keep it,  really recommend sending it back as I had a Dream Plan Build dvd get lost in the mail, but that didnt stop me getting 20 requests for payment. Just send it back, its easy. I've already sent it back and found a homeless dvd to use the dvd case for.

   Have fun with your trains

If u send it back, they pay postage, and someone at the sender has to deal with it, more expense. So if everyone sends it back, every time, u can have some fun at their expense. Eventually someone may figure out it is costing them more to handle the returns than they hope to make on the item.

Rene:

Isn't it normal practice to send a notice to the OP and post an explaination in the thread when you lock it?

FYI:  your explaination is perfect and I agree with the decision to lock it.

Dave,

If a thread is deleted or moved to another forum, yes, you will get a notice. I don't have the option to send you a notice if it's locked. I rarely lock threads, so I apologize for the confusion.

To all,

Yes, you can also return the DVD, or, if you wish, not open the package and return it to sender.

Sorry for starting the controversy but I wanted to see if anyone else felt as I do.

One last comment - the statement that "It's the publisher's site, they can do what they want to", as it relates to locking a thread,  is absolutely wrong.  It may be the publisher's site but it is still a public forum.  It's poor policy to block forum members from voicing their opinion on a relevant subject  even when that opinion is contrary to that of the site owner.
