Please help! mamod parts and boiler
Posted by Winna Pic & Yucca River R.R. on Sunday, October 23, 2011 11:21 PM

I'm extremely frustrated now because I can't find the parts that I need. I have searched beyond the ends of the universe to find two mamod chassis (no boiler, cab, tins, ect.)and a boiler big enough to run both the chassis under $100. I would like to build a garrett with my dad but if I can't find these parts the whole idea will literally go in the trash. Please help!

OK,

Did you read the extracts from my web pages?

If so then you know that you are looking for copper pipe 50mm dia and around 150mm long with a wall thickness of 1.6mm. Here in the UK that is a commercial PLUMBING size -so perhaps you local plumbing merchants would be a good bet?

So, to build a simple "Smithies" you would need the following:

Three 303mm lengths of 3mm copper rod @ £1.45p each -these give the longitudinal stays.

One 150mm length of drawn copper tube @ £8.40p -this is the boiler barrel.

Two 60mm sq 5mm thick copper plate @ £2.81p each -these are your end plates

Four 200mm lengths of 6mm soft coil copper tube 0.5mm wall, a 1 metre length is 7.18p -these are your water tubes.

You will need "silver solder" to glue it all together a metre length of EasiFlo-2 is about £10 and you can use borax for flux mixed with water and "paint" it onto the joint faces before heating.

All of the above shows that your boiler can be built for £35.55p or $56.80c.

You will need brass bar for the fitting and as I don't know what sort of fitting you plan to use that is all I can say!

If you are happy with the idea so far I can sit down and make you an assembly drawing and set of instructions for it's construction.

If Mamond mechanisms are not forthcoming, look into Ruby mechanisms or used Rubys.  I do not know if Accucraft would sell a partial kit with just the mechanism.  probably not cheaply enough.

Making a boiler is do-able too.  getting supplies may be tricky but not impossible.

You may be able get used copper pipe or off cuts from a plumber...have any freinds who are plumbers?  also try scrap yards which deal in copper.  They may also have some solid stock you could use for fittings.

The simplest fittings would be nuts silversoldered to the boiler...you might then have to build your own things to fit these nuts...cheaper but harder.  For professional results you will need a Lathe to make fittings and parts but you should be able to get by with a good drill and some taps and dies to make threaded holes.

You are not going to find them in the US for that amount....

Your best bet is to buy the parts from someone like PPS Steam slowly as funds allow and then screw them together.
