Facebook for G Scale Clubs

Do any of you use Facebook as a means of communicating with Club members ? I would be interested to know.

We have tried both Facebook and Twitter.  Unfortunately, not many of our club members are computer people and do not use social networking.  Search Facebook for North Texas Garden Railroad Club or try www.twitter.com/ntgrc.

Same is true here in Canada. Only a few use Facebook. Same problems. Not computer savvy and Facebook is seen more as a teen's web site.

Thanks for posing this question. We wonder about it too. I would think Facebook would be helpful, especially for last-minute communication, but for it to work, you need most of your club to be using FB.

Interesting comment about FB being a "teen's site." I think that might have been true at first, but not so anymore.

I would have to agree with you Rene. There are more than just teens using Facebook now. I know our family, young and old are using it regularly. Some club members might not use it but it might be a good tool to get some of the young people more involved in the hobby and it is a good way to get their feed back. I like having the option of being able to post pictures relatively easy. It could also be a good way to follow a club member's project.

There is a Facebook Page for people that like Aristo Craft trains. It can be another place to talk about your trains and post pictures.I think many of the members are way past the teen years.

I only subscribed to Facebook to be part of the Aristo-Craft page.  I do find it somewhat overwhelming at times as so much of the Home Page is full of daily minutiae about folks I don't know.  But it does have the advantage, albeit it only by typing messages, to friends whom I do know.

I much prefer, however, speech and use Skype for all international 'phone calls - some of which are free and others remarkably cheap.

I didn't mention it but I am the coordinator for the Chatham-Kent Garden Railway Society. I have mentioned to the club membership about using FB and I received a negative reaction. Many are uncomfortable with the number of people that post pictures of their children and grandchildren on FB. Regards, Dennis.
