The very First garden Railroad;
Posted by streamline j1e on Friday, August 27, 2010 9:20 AM

 As I was reading here about Garden railroading, it has been ingrained in me to ask this question.

 When was the very first garden railroad built, and what scale was it in?

There have been a few threads on this so you might want to search that in the post search box. I would say abouut a 100-120 years ago in the UK, probably tinplate. - Peter

I'm pretty sure it was in the UK but when...I have no idea. I would think at least 70+ years ago.

I’m going to put my foot in a bear trap here, but I seem to recall reading something about a UK, 16 mm layout at just over 120 years of continuos use. Predating that, I read somewhere that there was a live steam riding garden layout existed in the UK. We will need to wait for one (or more) of our friends from across the pond to lay claim (with evidence) to the oldest layout.
