NCNG-ifying (or F&CC) an old Kalamazoo boxcar

 boxcar as purchaced

I got a couple old Kalamazoo boxcars a while back. But the one above arrived a bit worse for wear. On truck was just broken loose, the other had 'sploded.broken truck

So, I spliced the truck back together with acrylic, Welder cement and screws. Then decided to adjust the ride height while I was at it. I lowered the carbody by cutting back the shoulders surrounding the kingpins. truck fixed

Since I already had the tools out, I decided to perform some meatball surgery just to see how it would come out. I didn't really like the 'fat lip' step on the ends, so I cast about for ideas.

The Nevada County Narrow Gauge had some ex- Florence and Cripple Creek 10 ton boxcars that would do nicely. NCNG #134

About 10 minutes of Dremel butchery, and some nwb castings later...new end sill

I also moved the brakewheel, extending the staff above the roof. Here's what it looks like now. - Nearly ready to return to service. After I took this pic I decided to add the wide flashing at the top of the doors and a few other details from the photo and another of a different NCNG/F&CC car.... but I'm plumb out of metal wheels.new car

I’m sure Mik will make it look older and dirtier as time progresses, Unless he happens to be going after a "just out of the shop" look. Nice repair/bash job Mik! Your choice of body color is very good.

It will get weathered with my usual 4 step rattle can weathering.... Just as soon as I find a spare $6 to buy primer grey and brown... The carbody color is Polly S PRR Tuscan. I got 3 bottles 75% off at a going out of business sale a couple years ago.... this is the last one, and I think I have enough for (maybe) two more cars

For those more fussy than I, my friend Andrew, recently took these pix of a restored car at the museum. http://www.pacificng.com/imglib/main.php?g2_itemId=17009
