Can ties be replaced under Aristo Craft track?
Posted by Gobbler on Saturday, May 1, 2010 6:29 PM

The plactic ties under my track is beginning to deteriorate.  Is it possible to buy and install replace ties?  If so, how much of a problem will this be?

Yes! Look underside for retainers and /or screws and remove. Ties are available from several folks on the Internet. Your question has me a bit curious. Most rail and tie combinations have approximately the same life span. How long has your stuff been in the ground? Are you using hollow "indoor" rail outside? I have some AC ties under LGB rails for seven years and no problem yet.

The track has been in place for about 10 years.  Although the ties are deteriorating the brass track seems fine at this point.  I did not know that there was a choice between outside and inside rail/ties.  The ties I have are hollow on the underside (ex: ART 30090 in 3' straight length).

In replacing the ties, I would assume that all track must be removed and the rail slid into replacement tie sections one rail at a time.  Can you give me some suggestions as to sources for replacement ties?

Thanks for all your suggestions.     Wm.

Inside rails are the kind that some manufacturers include in their starter sets. Hollow "folded" rails that rot out in just a few months when used outside. As I said above I have some Aristo ties (re-railers, remote uncouplers and such) under LGB 5-ft rails and have had no problem for over 8 years. I’m curious as to how and why your ties have deteriorated such that you need to replace them. I’m curious, have you been using a petroleum product for weed control along the right of way? I can understand how that would damage the ties.

Historically, there were some batches of Aristo track that apparently did not have UV stabilizer. This explains why some people have no problems and some do.

Aristo stands behind their product and will send you replacement ties, just send some pictures and tell them how many 1 foot sections you need.

Thanks for the responses.  I'll give AC a call and see what they have to say about it.  As for weed control, I have a woven weed barrier under the ballast material so the few weeds that do appear are usually pulled by hand.  I have used Roundup in other areas of the garden periodically.
