LGB Porter lubrication
Posted by IRB Souther Engineer on Tuesday, February 23, 2010 5:48 PM

Hi, I just bought a LGB porter on ebay. It is a 1991 model that hasen't been run since it was bought (it was brand new when the previous owner bought it). I was wondering if I should give it some grease before I began running it, and if so what type of lubricant should I use.

I'd venture it's worth opening the motor block and checking the amount, distribution, and location of the grease.

A bit of light oil on the valve gear and a bit on the axles.

LGB stuff is usually very trouble free and well made.

I have one of those, myself. You need to clean out all of the factory grease you can get out and then lube it up with Labelle #106 plastic compatible grease. It will almost eliminate the gear growl. Almost. Make sure it's the plastic compatible grease, though.

Hmm... I have read a lot of people swear by how good LGB grease is. The factory stuff I have seen is white, and does not impress me as to it's quality.

Any comments or experience? (obviously it must have quieted gear growl for you at least once!)
