Need help relettering LGB Tender
Posted by Mr_Ash on Thursday, November 12, 2009 10:59 PM

I want to reletter an LGB Mogul tender from Lake George & Boulder to D&RGW is there any easy way to remove the lettering or am I going to be stuck painting over it? If thats the case does anyone know kind of paint to get to match LGB's D&RGW "Grande Gold" Question

Usual suspects to try:

"Super Clean" degreaser, denatured alcohol, DOT-3 brake fluid, probably in that order as the degreaser is the most benign in terms affecting paint. The alcohol and brake fluid may get the lettering off, but it may also affect the base paint. With all of them, you'll want to soak the lettering in whatever fluid you choose for a bit of time.

As for a paint match, I haven't the foggiest.

I had some good results with 600 grit wet/day sandpaper on some aristo FA's I repainted. It did leave the surface shiney but left the base coat on. I did see some 1000 grit at Home Depot.

I've used denatured alcohol with a q-tip, then wipe it off quickly with a damp towel. The super clean is great for stripping paint off plastic and will not harm it. Just finish up at the sink with a toothbrush to scrub off the little that is left after a soaking.

Well I think it's about as good as it's going to get, upclose in the light you can still see a shadow of the letters im guessing that means the tender has gotten some sun no? You cant really tell from a few feet away though and this tender is for my 4yr old nephew's loco and hes not as picky as me haha!

I also removed the decals from another LGB tender an older DSP&P green tender it only took the superclean like 15 minutes to break that up I was dripping gold superclean on my way from the soaking bin to the sink and that lettering washed right off without any scrubbing where the lake george & boulder lettering took hours plus lots of scrubbing or should I say brushing ha I so did not look forward to brushing my teeth today Dead

I need to get some more superclean this stuff is really nice should save me some time and paint in renumbering cars Big Smile

Here is the Lake George & Boulder tender, the light is a headlight from an old bachmann big hauler loco with an amberish colored light from an LGB Caboose marker light wired to the power pickup trucks so its allways on but like I said the kid isnt as picky as me

Locomotive + Tender D&RGW 177 (3rd) 4-6-0 big hauler.  I still need to letter the tender but theres other stuff I still need to do first before its done and decals come towards the end. I need to replace the black plastic stuff with brass+brass paint (lol I painted brass brass) to better match the loco, paint some white trim, change out the wheels & truck sideframes w/USA, add coal load ext ext ext
