I run all Bachmann locos on my layout G gauge,  I have been told by several people that i should use the linear setting on the control unit.    I find this gives the jack rabbit type of start, PWC gives a smother start and I find speed control is smother with pwc.    Your comments on this as I have heard that if loco fails Bachmann can tell that you have used pwc and get a bit stroppy about repair.

PWC wave form will cause extra heat in the motor as compared to straight DC. However, I can't see how Bachmann service could determine what kind of power was used on a failed motor. It would require microscopic examination of the windings and insulation to find evidence of high voltage breakdown. I believe that a loco that is consistently overloaded running on pure DC would present the same as one that overheated from PWC stress.

I agree with Walt and your perceptions of smoother starts and better speed control. I built my own PWC throttles when I was in HO and use the PWC position with my TE’s and have never had a motor burn out. I think the only way they would know it had been used with PWC is if the customer told them. One thing I learned from my kids is the answer, “I don’t know.”

Have fun, Rob

Hi Rob, Thanks for the info, I know that the motors are not as good in Bachmann as LGB that is my main concern Its a shame that T/E do not have a smother start on the linear side of the unit.
