Hey Fat man welcome to Trains. Best option for a question like this is in the Trains forum.

Where in California? And where in Indiana? If LA from LA Union Station to Chicago on the Chief and then Chicago to Indianapolis on the Hoosier State.

Here is amtraks site I used.

Fat Man - Route Rock gave you the correct answer - take the Amtrak "Southwest Chief" from LA to Chicago, then transfer to the "Cardinal" or "Hoosier State" - both go to Indianapolis where you would get off. Richmond is over at the eastern border of the state just off I-70, so you need some sort of rubber tired transportation for that last leg of the journey....

The Zephyr leaves Sacramento in the morning, IIRC, and crosses the Sierra in daylight, then night to Salt Lake and daylight over the Rockies to Denver, and another night to Chicago. Check the Amtrak website.

Our grandkids live outside of Sacramento, and this spring  we took them to Disneyland by train instead of driving. The Coast Starlight. Wonderful trip, much better than driving all day!  The first time we have taken a real train trip -- as opposed to tourist trains -- in 35 years!

Been on the Zypher what an awsome ride. Amtrack has handicapped rooms, with your own bathroom. they will also deliver meals to your room.
