AML Track Quality
Posted by DennisB on Sunday, March 15, 2009 3:49 PM

Has anyone used AML flex track? Does it stand up well? I am also looking at using code 250 brass for a separate layout. Does it stand up well? Any information would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Dennis.

The AML track (code 332) is rather robust. I reviewed it for GR around a year ago, so if you look in the Product Review archives, you can read the review there. One thing that is not mentioned--the rail may not be exactly .332" tall. People have been reporting the rail varying in height from .332" to .380" tall. This really isn't much of an issue unless you go from one manufacturer to another on a routine basis. Typically the difference in height can be compensated for in the rail joiner or by rail clamps. (If it's really noticeable, a little bit of filing takes care of it.)

The AMS (code 250) track is also very good. I've had it down on my railroad since 2005, and it's proven very good. I don't know if their code 250 switches are actually on the store shelves yet, but if not, they should be in short order. Otherwise, you can use Sunset Valley's code 250 switches.

Do not let anyone try to convince you that code 250 is too small/weak to use outdoors. It's simply not true. I've had it in the ground on various railroads since 1996, and it's proven every bit as stable as code 332 rail. Just make sure you've got a solid foundation beneath it.

Later,

K

HELLO THERE...  WE HAVE 132' AML FLEX 332 AMERICAN STYLE TIES.  THE TRACK IS VERY FLEXIBLE AND IT WEATHERS PRETTY NICE.  IN GREEN BAY, WE HAVE VERY COLD WINTERS AND VERY HOT SUMMERS AND IT APPEARS THAT AML STANDS UP TO THESE HARSH CONDITIONS.  I'M SO HAPPY WITH THE TRACK, THAT WE HAVE PURCHASED ANOTHER 72' FROM ST.AUBIN.  THEY SEEM TO HAVE THE BEST PRICES RIGHT NOW ON THE TRACK.  GOOD LUCK...GUNDY
