USA Trains 1:24 scale???
Posted by skippygp123 on Saturday, March 14, 2009 12:57 PM

I am curious about 3 pieces of USA Trains rolling stock that I have.  One is a Sheffield Farms Refrigerator Car (R-16038), another is a Mobile & Ohio box car ( R-19003) and the third is a Burlington Route box car that carries road number C B & Q 62984 but for which I have no box.  Does anyone know if these are 1:24 scale or 1:29 scale?  I can't find these listed on any website and the people at USA Trains have told me they don't know.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

The cars you mention are from USA Trains original freight car molds. At that time most manufacturers and ā€œGā€ gaugers used equipment that looked ok as narrow gauge or standard gauge mixed together, being happy to have any support. So to answer your question in standard gauge they are about 36ā€™ cars, in narrow gauge about 20 ā€“ 30 foot cars.

Hope this helps, Rob

These consists contain a few USA cars mixed in with Bachmann, AristoClassic/Delton, and LGB cars. As you can see they are all pretty much the same size (1:22.5 and 1:24 scale) -

The older USA trains (could even be old enough to be called Charles Ro) were essentially the same size as LGB offerings...so roughly 1:22.5.  A lot is billed as being 1:24, but very few are...with Delton and the later Aristo-Craft classics being the closest to 1:24.

By mixing and matching a lot of brands over the years, USA size/scale matches very well with LGB, as does most early Bachmann items.  Aristo-Craft Classics and Delton are not as good.

So I'd say your USA cars are closest to 1:22.5 scale.
