Switch questions, turnouts and mixing brands
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, April 16, 2004 9:10 AM
Once again, let me preface by saying I'm new to all this, just in case my questions sound rudimentary to you all. With that said, I've read previous topics on switches and track. Looked at some technical links about the various tracks. Still looking for answers. All my track right now is LGB, but I have purchased no switches/turnouts as of yet. It's my understanding that if I stick with LGB electric type switches, I'm limited to using their control panel to operate them. I don't have alot of track to lay, so going electric and dealing with the wiring is not my concern. Realizing that people have personal preferences and loyalties to products and not getting into politics, can I go with Aristo switches/turnouts with my existing LGB track? Should I stick with all LGB and just bite the bullet on their expensive controls? Which track is going to cause me the least amount of headache, least derailments, and expense in the long run?
Thanks,
Rich

Rich,

You can mix and match any which way you like (I'm talking the Code332 brass stuff!). Just keep in mind that Aristo uses a different track geometry than LGB i.e. the radii differ.
Now on the expensive controls for the LGB turnouts: all you really need is a single-pole double-throw spring loaded center-off switch and two diodes for each switch. Sample diagram here http://www.girr.org/girr/tips/tips1/lgb_1600.html#controls

Trust me those LGB turnout motors have no idea if the current comes from a LGB powersource through LGB switching components or if it is "all generic".
I know LGB would like all their customers to buy every single item from LGB. Some actually do!
OTOH the smart and frugal ones figure out the alternatives.[;)][8D][:D][;)]

Brian,

As with most things in life, you can't remember everything, but as long as you remember where to look, you're set.[;)][:)]
