REI The new look must be part of the "upgrading" trend. I liked the old format better, it was more, how do you say? Rustic.

I agree. Although I don't think I can say I "hate" it, but after using it for a week or two I have concluded that I don't think it is as intuitive to maneuver as the former version. I realize it's free, and for us subscribers it's another benefit. And Kalmbach wants to attract new users to the forums so maybe their marketing people convinced them the new look would do just that.
But I would rather pay $30 a year and dump the advertising in the right hand side and let the forum entries stretch across the screen width. Also the top banner graphic is cool but....once you've seen the model train photo, it just takes up space after that. If GR could change that picture every week, that would be cool, because seeing the same picture all the time is...well....boring.
Here is another minor problem: when you wish to jump out of a thread back to the main forum, it is not real obvious how to do that!. It used to be - at the top you could easily jump back to the main level. But here, the "path" is in microscopic font (just under the header banner) and it took me awhile to even spot it. Recommended: make the font larger for the forum path links.
Otherwise...I'll get used to it.
