Question, IE 7 has security and folder issues with it, do it have to be total IE 7

I know I switched once and wish I did not is why I am asking.

I've had IE7 a long time now and nary a problem. I do all my updates regularly though.

Toad, I think Bergie meant his note to be more of a notice than a Q&A session.

You don't need to have IE7, but that and Firefox are the recommended browsers. At work, I primarily use Safari and, outside of a few quirks (like no smilies), it works for me. At home, I use AOL's browser without a problem. Try your current browser and see what works for you.

The look of the web site and the forum software will both change. There will be some time when you won't be able to access the site on Wednesday. Don't worry. We'll be back soon!

I don't have issues with IE7 other than it is a slow loader.  This, and the other trains.com Fora, work on AOL (slow as it is IE7 based), Firefox 3 and Opera - which are fast - without issues for me.

I had some security problems with IE7, then I loaded the "Google Toolbar" as a "controler" for IE7, and have had no problems since.  (I'm sure "controler " is the wrong word, but it stops popups, and blocks out the things I do not want.)  One inconvienience, is that it asks me three times if I try to load a new program or even an update to MS Vista, and IE7.  I would rather it make sure I want to do something rather than allow the system to load something I don't want.

Not a problem. Just thought you HAD to have IE 7.

Problems I had

• Install
• Took all my fav's folders away (deleted them)
• Several things did come through my IE 7 that hurt my computer and I had to send it to my IT guy to work those out. After I got it back he told me not to return to IE 7 untill microsoft got the program right. (when is anything right with micro?)

I did not mean to make a crappy thread I just wanted to know if I HAD to have IE 7.

Hello,

To address a couple of points...

First, IE7 or Firefox are going to provide the best experience. Remember, there will be an update to the forum software, meaning the interaction with browsers may be different. We've found -- through upgrades to our other Web sites, like Astronomy.com -- that IE7 and Firefox 2.0 work best.

Toad, I'd give IE7 a try again to see if later patches fixed the problems you were having. Unfortunately, each and every user who visits our site probably has a different computer configuration. Between the computer platform, operating system (and any security patches), browser version, and security software used, the variables are endless. All we know from previous roll-outs of this forum software is that IE7 or Firefox 2.0 (or higher) work best.

Hopefully everything will go smoothly and no one will encounter problems. Don't worry, I'm confident the sky is not falling and that a month from now this will be a distant memory.

I just hope we dont loose all the past threads, when MLS upgraded they luckily loaded all the old posts into an archive location, so at least its still accessable, but when Gscalemad upgraded, they lost everything to date and had to start over from scratch!

Hi Bergie,   Over the pond we do get problems with firefox  MS win XP with norton as anti virus does not like f/f.  A good number of us use  BT internet and not explorer for logging on to the forums. I hope we will still be able to access the forums. I know you need to keep upto date with the forums, but ask what people use around the world before lauching a new update. Please please inclued a spell checker.

In terms of browser usage, we do keep an eye on what our analytics software tells us in terms of what users are using. Please try the new forum and see if it works under your current set up. If it does, great. If it doesn't, try one of the two browsers mentioned. If those don't work, contact [e-mail] and explain the situation you are personally encountering (if you encounter any at all).

As for spell checker... if you use Firefox, I believe it has automatic spell checker (or at least an option to turn on a spell checker built into Firefox) that may work with the new forum. I tested Firefox 3.0.1 on our sister site www.ScaleAutoMag.com forums and the spell checker worked, but I can't gaurantee that it's going to work for everyone based on your personal configurations.

For IE7 users, you can use spell checker if you download a plug-in called ieSpell from www.download.com. The new forum will have an icon for spell checker in the message editing box, to the right of the other options like bold, underline, hyperlink, etc.

I'm going going to post similar instruction on spell checking in the Community Assistance section of the Trains.com Forums section (last section near bottom where all our forum sections are listed) once the new site launches.

Again, you'll have to test to see if you can get spell checker to work on your end. I can't make any promises.

Well, I live in the United Kingdom as do not experience any issues with Firefox 3 (and its predecessors).

However I use AntiVir as my anti virus programme and have used it for 6 years.  In fact initially all help and the Forum was solely in German.  But  it has been a most reliable programme and also free.

Incidentally I have a spell check with the new web site: it was not available in the old Forum.

As to the new format well, I think it is very sharp.  It seems very clear cut, as they say, and  easier on the eye.
