What do you guys think about using a layer of asphalt cold patch. I am thinking putting large rock on the bottom for drainage, then the layer of cold patch with fines on top of that. The asphalt will (I hope) help hold some of the fines and won't wash away. Has anyone tried this yet?

That's an interesting idea. I've never really worked with that stuff--how thick does it have to be to be durable?

I haven't tried it either. I'm thinking asfault would be water tight so you might have some drainage problems. How sticky is that stuff when you first put it down? Let us know how it goes.

You better get your grass heat gun out! Cold patch is cold, no kidding.
Some people in mgt. use it in small dips in there parking lots but never heat it so they let the sun heat it. Check label.
What I am thinking is keeping it cold and not very compact. I am hoping it will become a flexible layer that is tacky enough to not wash away. Set the track on it and then add ballast over it. It will be a couple weeks before I am ready but for the small size I am doing (18x24) to start with I think I will try it. If it doesn't work I can always dig it up and do it again LOL.
PS I have used cold patch in my driveway so I know what it is like. There is also another patch that is all sand for cracks, the stuff sticks to everything.
