I finally ordered it...
Posted by Mr_Ash on Saturday, May 24, 2008 8:32 AM

Last night after a few bottles of Coors I ordered Bachmann K27 464 from Ridge Road Station Shock [:O]

Anyone here already have a K? I need to know what type of Kadee couplers to get for it to connect upto my LGB car's.

Boy Brian, do you even have any track to run it on or is it going to be a dusty shelf queen? Don't let the missus see the bill for that one! Then you'll have to get a bunch of 1:20 cars to go along with it. No idea on the kadees maybe JDM will chime in here.

lol shelf queen! Big Smile [:D]

Right now I will be able to run it around the oval of track I have setup in my living room all the curves are R3 so shouldnt be a problem... Untill I get back to working outside then all that track is going in the backyard... So... I will be able to run it for a few weeks or so untill I finish my roadbed outside then it will be a "Shelf Queen" untill I finish the outside layout.

Next friday (5/30) im planning a day trip back up to Flint Michigan to visit and ride the Huckleberry RR at Crossroads Village and hopefully get some more pictures of the real D&RGW 464 in action Smile [:)]

K-Day
Posted by Mr_Ash on Thursday, May 29, 2008 2:07 PM

Any second, minute, hour UPS is going to ring my doorbell and "IT WILL HAVE ARRIVED!!!" lol... I got off work at 8am came home cleaned and oiled all of my big haulers & annies, cleaned my track, mowed the lawn, used the weed eater on the sidewalks, patio and "city limits" for my garden rr  under construction all the rain in the last few weeks really helped the weeds grow up and some ants moved in too! Banged Head [banghead]

I just got finished helping the city worker cut up the tree limb that fell across our driveway in that big storm last weekend, mowed the parkway and cleaned up the lawnmower...

Most Importantly changed the picture above my fireplace from RGS20 to D&RGW 464

The K's first train will consist of a LGB Box car, Baggage car, closed vestibule combine & coach and USA woodside caboose Tongue [:P]

Still looking for 1 more closed vestibule coach or combine Dead [xx(]

yeah ive been running it off and on last couple hours, she really doesnt seem to like the R3 curves much sounds about the same as running an annie through R1's that said after 20-30 minutes of running she didnt seem to complain as much but it was enough to make me think about changing the curves im going to be using outside again.

I ended up using a Kadee 830 coupler for the tender with one of the bachmann coupler mounts, they look almost the same but the bachmann mount is a bit slimmer where the kadee mount wont quite fit the gap anyway just popped the couple & spring in and it works normal same height as my LGB/Bmann rollingstock...

Same here toad but today i felt like i a little kid on christmas morning with the biggest box under the tree Big Smile [:D]

I need to atleast get a 1:20 caboose though, I dont mind the scale differance while its running but a 1:22 car sitting behind it on the fireplace mantel looks small, and I thought the USA caboose looked big for 1:22 Shock [:O]

I need to figure out how to remove the snowplow, I dont mind all the lights being on but I would like to be able to turn the smoke on and cant get the smokebox door open with the plow mounted.. think ill just wait untill the other pilots are available and get a road pilot and switch it to that Dead [xx(]

I like the plow and all plus just about all of the pictures I have seen of 464 in service it has the plow mounted but 464 has a road pilot on it now at Huckleberry RR and I like the looks of it. Plus then I would be able to switch back and forth Tongue [:P]

Oh yeah I dont like those little lids that open on the tender trucks lol I thought I lost 2 already but they were just opened all the way had me digging through the box and searching the living room for a couple hours this morning before I picked the tender up and looked at it from the botom DOH!

Ill try and get some pictures later, the lighting in my living room sucks its mostly lit by outside light through the windows and its storming so the room is dark Sigh [sigh]

wow im a dummy, the smokebox door is cut in half across the middle just above where the top of the plow is so it still opens DOH lol here was me standing looking at the locomotive on the fireplace mantel and I thought to myself "wouldnt that be funny if the door was cut in half and it opened" i tried to open it and sure enought... Im not amused! lol (this doesnt mean im not getting another pilot! lol)

Size wise compared to the 1/22 stuff it reminds me of a standard gauge loco converted to NG wich in my head works out okay because the Grande sold 2 K27's to mexico and they converted them to Standard Gauge (I know SG K27's look funny in my head too!)  lol yeah its like K37 big compared to he 1:22 stuff but botom line is i can live with the size doesnt bother me to much with freight cars but passenger cars... meh the bachmann cars seem small for 1/22 (want to get an aristo C16 and run them with that!) and the LGB cars would be perfect if they were a bit longer the closed vestibule cars look the best out of all of them. I might get an accucraft caboose to keep it company on the fireplace mantel lol thats about all there would be room for Tongue [:P]

That engine weighs a ton! Im not sure if your saposed to disconnect the tender before you pick it up but I have been picking it up off my living room oval of track to the fireplace mantel the same as my 4-6-0's.... left hand thumb and 2 fingers on the steam dome and right pickup the tender... geez... before I got this i thought my annies were heavy compared to the big hauler's... this thing... OMG its heavy! I was moving 2 of my annies around today and it felt like i was lifting freight cars LOL!!!

Also i would like to add that I liked the DVD included with the engine, lots of pictures of K27's ive never seen before along with a nice lil history lesson Big Smile [:D]Thumbs Up [tup]

  Mr Ash,

I would be carefull picking up the K by the steam dome as I beleave i'ts a press fit into the boiler and could come out. I use both hands to pick up my engine, seperating the tender before moving it.  Have you had any problems with the plugs from the engine to the tender comming loose??  I'm running on a temporary loop of track 8' curves and the plugs have come loose 4 or 5 times. I have #455 post wreck w plow, thanks for the tip on the smokebox door.

The steam dome seems to be pretty solid, the sand dome popped right off though. Im just paranoid im going to break or bend somthing if I pick it up from the botom, same goes for the tender im keeping it connected to the engine because im paranoid im going to break the wires or connectors by attaching and reattaching them alot. I had a hard time getting them disconnected when I took the tender off to open it up and switch the polarity

As far as the wires coming loose no I havent had that problem and im also just running it on a temp loop with R3 curves, make sure that the tab on the plug is snapped over the part where it plugs into the tender and is locked in place.
