I noticed a few people mentioning the Georgetown Loop. For those that don't know, this will probably be the last season of operation due to a squabble with the Colorado Historical Society. The following article is from Channel 9 News in Denver just a few days ago. Better go ride it now.

Tom

Colorado Historical Society searching for new railroad operator
by: Susan Wells (Web Producer)
Created: 4/19/2004 10:44 AM MDT - Updated: 4/19/2004 10:44 AM MDT

GEORGETOWN - The Colorado Historical Society is promising that the Georgetown Loop Railroad will continue to operate in 2005.

The historical society has launched a massive search for a new operator after contract negotiations with the current one broke down. The operator had run the train for 30 years.

"We've done this successfully for 30 years, and we are in complete awe at the lack of communication from the Colorado Historical Society and their shortsightedness," said Mark Greksa, co-owner of Georgetown Loop Railroad Inc. "It seems they are doing this out of spite."

The negotiations reached an impasse in March when Greska wanted financial help to maintain the trains and the historical society wanted him to help maintain the state-owned buildings in the park.

The historical society owns the four and a half mile track that connects Georgetown and Silver Plume. They don't own the trains or engines and have been looking for a replacement operator.

Despite their upbeat prediction about 2005, those in the industry say it will be impossible to find a replacement operator.

Any operators who have working engines and cars are already running them on other routes. Using other historic narrow-gauge equipment would require extensive and expensive restoration before it could be used.

More than 115,000 people rode the Georgetown Railroad last summer. It is a strong economic generator in the Clear Creek County area.
